Youths Must Be Empowered To Take On Responsibilities, Says Dogara
Nigerian Youths, who form the largest portion in Tertiary Institutions, must be fully empowered to take up the mantle of responsibilities adequately without limitations, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Dogara, has said.
Speaking at a Public Hearing of the House Committee on Tertiary Education and Services on 3 Bills referred to it by the House, Dogara emphasised that ” as leaders, we must do all we can to strive through effective and result oriented leadership for positive impact particularly on the education sector”.
The Speaker also stressed the importance of constant review and amendment of laws to engender efficiency in the education sector.
“Tertiary Education in Nigeria, which had been faced with serious challenges,needs constant amendment of existing obsolete laws and enactment of new ones for better repositioning and contribution to national development”.
He assured of his continued commitment to guiding House in its core duties.
” The present House of Representatives, under my leadership, as you may know, is committed to the core legislative functions of the Parliament which is law making and laws can only be made through Bill processing. The other functions are representation and oversight”.
“Modern legislatures perform a myriad of functions and roles which derive from their Constitutional position in a democracy. We therefore believe that democratic norms must also be employed in bill process to ensure public input and acceptance, hence the essence of the Public Hearing”.
He commended the House leader for initiating and sponsoring a bill that will promote easy access to education.
” Let me state here, at this juncture, that l am particularly delighted to commend the Leader of the House of Representatives, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila for demonstrating strong interest in education particularly easy access to Higher Education for Nigerians, through interest free loans, by sponsoring a bill to ensure education for all Nigerians and it is one of the bills for discussion in this Public hearing”.
While urging the MDAs and relevant stakeholders in the education sector to be pro-active and open to positive changes, particularly to this very important legislative process, for effective service delivery and vibrant tertiary education in Nigeria, Dogara reminded them that ” posterity will always judge our actions and inactions, so we must do the needful today and leave the uncertainties for tomorrow. Our youth of today must be given the best to forestall any future calamity”.
