Will Nuhu Ribadu Suffer His Father’s Fate of 1979? By Timawus Mathias
In 1979, against all expectations, Alhaji Ahmadu Ribadu clinched the NPN ticket to run for Gongola Guber and contestants at the Primaries were so disgruntled that an alliance between the UPN, NPP, and GNPP was galvanized overnight and a poor Mummuye teacher Alhaji Abubakar Barde teaming up with another teacher from Maiha Wilberforce Baftai Juta defeated the NPN, grinding the noses of then NPN bigwigs from Adamawa in the dust. This singular act caused Shagari to appoint alternative Governors called Presidential Liason Officers PLOs for non NPN States and to my mind triggered all other faulty steps that in the end, caused the collapse of the 2nd Republic.
I am at a loss as to what PDP would use to harpoon disgruntled gubernatorial contestants into toeing the line should Nuhu Ribadu be forced on the party like favours to a blue-eyed boy, and Ribadu may then suffer his father’s fate of 1979.
And 2007 repeating itself is the Nyako saga – being dashed the ticket with a sham primary that is almost a non primary.
Not to forget that just as there was Senator Mahmud Waziri in 1979, there is Vice President Atiku Abubakar, already out of PDP and in APC.
