The Wedding Party, a romantic/comedy drama, has shattered multiple Nigerian box office records.
Directed by Kemi Adetiba, The Wedding Party has broken A Trip to Jamaica‘s record of grossing N35 million in its opening weekend.
Released in cinemas about twelve days ago, the movie has reportedly grossed over N120 million in total.
According to the producers, the movie centered around a typical Nigerian wedding, grossed N21.5 million on December 26 alone.
“After a record-breaking opening weekend at N36 million, The Wedding Party now holds the biggest opening week in the history of Nollywood at N66 million.
“The Wedding Party has set a new record across the nation. On the 26th December 2016, The Wedding Party gorssed N21.5 million in just one day.
“Revenues to date are now over N120m in total. This is unprecedented in the history of Nollywood. The Wedding Party’s official release date across all cinemas in Nigeria was 16th December, 2016,” the producers said in a statement.
A Trip to Jamaica, produced by Ayo Makun, was in November announced as the first film to make N35 million in its first weekend and also the first film to gross N62 million in its first week.
The movie was also the fastest film to rake in N100 million in 17 days as well as the fastest to make N150 million in six weeks.
The Wedding Party is now on course to break those records.
Cinema house, Film One, says “audiences nationwide” are in love with the movie which stars Banky W, Adesua Etomi, Richard Mofe-Damijo, Iretu Doyle, Sola Sobowale, among others.
“Nollywood doing great things. In a year of abundant downturns, the Nigerian movie industry has come out strong. The Wedding Party has proved to be the go-to movie this season. Audiences nationwide have fallen in love with the beautifully shot, casted, directed and produced movie,” said Film One.
The Wedding Party was jointly produced by EbonyLife TV, FilmOne, InkBlot Koga Studios.
