We are the Architects of Peace – Emir of Daura By Bello Ahmadu Alkammawa
The security challenges that have engulfed this country especially Northern Nigeria is one of the most potent force that threatening the very corporate existence of the country.Several factors have been deduced as of the causes responsible for this crisis. Some blame it on poverty and its attendant youthful restiveness and unemployment. Others put the blame squarely on the doors of politicians who are trying to outwit each other to secure political power. Yet others are wont to argue that the emergence of Boko Haram which out rightly rejects secularism, corruption and bad governance and insist on entrenching full implementation of Sharia law in especially Northern Nigeria was partly or fully responsible.Be that as it may, from armed banditry, kidnapping, pipeline vandalization, bomb blast and suicide bombings, Nigeria has been gradually turned into a theatre of war. The most affected however is Northern Nigeria, especially North-east.
The activities of Boko Haram has led to the death of thousand of innocent lives, displaced and made hundred of thousand homeless and worst disrupted the economic activities of the region. In the last 2 years, North-Eastern states have lost billions of Naira as a result of lull economic activities due to the ceaseless attacks on its people and economy by Boko Haram insurgent.Apart from the activities of Boko Haram, there are also been pockets of Inter and Intra communal/ethnic crises and Fulani-Farmers clashes. All these have denied the zone, the opportunity to get democratic dividends and the much needed investment especially Direct Foreign Investment (FDI) that could assist in growth and development. From Borno to Sokoto the story is the same the spate of violence and killings along ethnic and religious divide in the region should really be a source of worry for a government that is determine to uplift the standard of living of its people.
Not only that, because the region, shared boundary with Cameroun and Chad and Niger Republic, there is cross-border banditry and arms importation which has made its borders very porous. Most of the crisis that occurred in those states could be linked to this problem. Disturbed by the way the North is gradually turning into a theatre of war, youth in the region form an umbrella that has so far has a co-coordinator from every state and FCT Abuja in order to not only checkmate the insecurity syndrome but to bring mutual understanding between the youth from the two religious bodies, it will also going to organize seminars/workshops as well as competitions in all the secondary schools of northern Nigeria, this will ginger love among the youth in order for them to become brothers keepers in future.
The Association of Youth for the Promotion of Peace in Northern Nigeria had join hands with political leaders, traditional rulers, religious clerics and other committed stakeholders have been making strenuous efforts to address the security problem/challenges of the region. Most of the intervention by government-federal and states have mostly been a short term strategy. Deploying the military (Joint Task Force) to arrest militants, mount roadblocks or go on a house to house search of militants and their weaponry could only slow down their activities but will hardly eliminate it. Considering the Sociology of the Security problem facing the North which has religious, ethnic, economic and social dimension, there is the need to have a holistic approach and understanding of the crisis.
In order to find a lasting and sustained solution to the ongoing security challenges, all hands must be on deck. In other words, there is need to involve all stakeholders in designing a road map for lasting peace and stability in the region. More often, policy makers restrict their searchlight to only the security and related agencies whenever they are faced with crisis at hand. For thorough diagnosis of the problem, AYPPNN intend to effectively engage the Service of experts/academics in Security, Conflict Resolution Development, Empowerment and Skill Acquisition, Religious Clergies and Traditional/Culture experts. The idea is to analyze and harmonize their submission so that position papers could be submitted to the government on the way out of the present imbroglio.
Against this background the association embarks on tour and paying homage to the traditional rulers of the region seeking blessing as well as advice on how to achieve meaningful development in the area of peaceful co-existence. Their first avenue is the historical city of Daura where they pay homage to the Alhaji Umar Faruk the Emir of Daura. In his speech at the palace, the National Chairman of the association, Alhaji Muhammad Sambo Balarabe inform the emir that, they choose his palace to be the first to be visited due to its historical background, going by its position as a home to every Hausa speaking man/woman worldwide and also due to the emir’s desire of having a peaceful environment. He informed the emir that the association was not only form to bring mutual understanding between the followers of the two religions but also to join hands with traditional rulers from the region in their quest for peace, he therefore enjoin them to see the associations as theirs in order for it to achieve its desire objectives in eliminating violence and other problems militating against the peaceful co-existence of the region and nation as a whole.
Responding the Emir of Daura, Alhaji Dr. Umar Faruk thanks the association for paying him homage on the issue of peace, which according to him is paramount in anything going to do with development worldwide. He describe the visit as timely going by the happenings in the region which he said has to do with youth restiveness or being used by politicians as errand boys in order to cause violence. He called on the members of the association to fear Allah in their activities; he went further to say “Try to avoid being used by politicians and other elements in order to change your objectives from promoting peace to causing violence through monetary gains and other avenue been used to buy your conscience” he added: whatever you do outside your desire objectives which was welcome by every peace lover in the region, you will be questioned by Allah in the hereafter, you should therefore fear Allah in all your undertakings of bringing peaceful atmosphere in our region said the emir.
He inform the association that, traditional rulers are the backbone of peace but they cannot perform the work alone, they need good cooperation of all and sundry as well as association of youth like AYPPNN to join hands with them in order to return the region as it is in the olden days. The emir said though the three tiers of government are trying their best but people most especially youth must come together to do away with anything that can bring violence or bloodbath in the region, he said time has come when every good citizen of the region should re-think and give peace a chance, in order for the region to restore its image dented by some miscreants for them to achieve their selfishness interest. He concludes his short speech by reminding his colleagues nationwide to embrace peace with one another in order for the country to not only move forward but to be respected worldwide among its peers.
