We Are Ready For The Solar Car Race, Says Solar Challenge Nigeria
The Project Coordinator for the Solar Challenge Nigeria(SCN), Mr. Oluwafemi Ganzallo on Wednesday 30th of July, 2013, in University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Enugu State, while presenting the Competition’s brochures to the members of University of Nigeria Solar Team and the National Centre for Energy Research and Development team, said the Solar Challenge Nigeria team is ready to organise the first ever Solar Car Race in Nigeria come November this year.
Mr. Ganzallo while addressing the Solar teams, congratulated them for successfully completing their registration and for being part of a landmark initiative that would turn around the fortune of renewable energy research in the country, saying, their participation in the challenge has started a revolution of sustainable energy research projects in Nigerian tertiary institutions and has also opened a path for scientific, innovative and technological recovery that would liberate the country from environmental pollution and epileptic darkness.
” The Solar Challenge Nigeria team congratulates you on the journey so far, your ability to successfully register for the Solar Car Challenge is what brings us to you today, along with 8 other tertiary institutions, UNN Solar Team and National Centre for Energy Research and Development Solar Team have chosen to be part of history and a landmark initiative that would turn around the fortunes of renewable energy research in the country. You may not fully understand the implication of challenging yourselves to be fore runners in this annual renewable energy research revolution, but your participation alone has shown that when the will is there Nigerians can be innovative, creative and resourceful. We hope to open a path to scientific, innovative and technological recovery that would liberate the country from environmental degradation, epileptic darkness and find ways to reduce poverty through clean, sustainable alternatives to everyday utility implements through innovative research in Solar Energy through this challenge”.
Responding to the Project Coordinator’s address, the Faculty Advisor to the UNN Solar Car Team, Engr. Prof. D.O.N Obikwelu of Department of Materials and Metallurgical Engineering, said, ” the Solar Challenge Nigeria initiative is a good one by citizens enthusiastic to solve problems around them, However, he pointed out the urgent need to change the mindset of the government towards scientific innovations in tertiary institutions, thus the perfect timing of the Solar Car Race competition.
Stating further, he said that, “What government and its agencies don’t understand is that some of the research inventions by students rotting away in respective engineering departments in different tertiary institutions could be further supported and funded to help advance the nation in its drive for technological advancement”.
Leader of the UNN Solar Car Team, Umanah Michael, in his own response says their team is motivated by the Solar Challenge Nigeria’s team visit and that they(UNN) are in the competition to win. ” Except for funding challenge we are presently facing, we are motivated to win this competition”, he emphasised.
Also while receiving the SCN team on behalf of Dr. Paulinus Ugwoke, the Director, National Centre for Energy Research and Development, UNN, Father Edward Anoliefo, said, ” on behalf of the Director who is away on official duty, let me say the Centre would be ready to participate in the competition. I also use this medium to appreciate the financial, technical and moral support the Director is giving the Solar Team, this no doubt put us in a sure footing to participate “. Anoliefo is the Team Leader for the NCERD-UNN Solar Car Race Team.
Earlier in the week, the SCN Check-Up team also checked on the activities of the host institution, Kings Polytechnic, Ubiaja in Edo State, to know the level of preparedness of the hosting team and also officially hand them the brochures too.
The visit to Kings Polytechnic and University of Nigeria, is part of the country tour and Team Check-up assessment effort by the Solar Challenge Nigeria team to know the preparedness of the respective participating institutions. The schools that would also be included in these assessment visits in the course of the tour include, Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, Adamawa State University, Mubi, National Centre for Energy Research, Uthman Dan Fodio University, Sokoto, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ife, and Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma.
