Who Wants A Shot In The Head? By Jude Feranmi
Having considered all the optimistic possibilities of a Nigerian evolution or revolution, whichever suits you, in birthing a change in this nation, I have not yet come to a conclusion, but I am at a juncture where I think only altruistic motives can drive change in our country. We need peopke who will stand up and say I am going to identify a problem in this nation and ensure I solve it and more importantly not for profit purposes but because of a sense of, like I said altruism. This nation has offered us nothing to demand that we the citizens are patriotic. To say it is a sense of duty to be patriotic begs the question, Even those who control the nation have not fulfilled their duties, yet they act as if everything is normal. Why then should an ordinary citizen have or feel a sense of duty.
Nevertheless, there is no doubt that even though we fly to other countries and some of us even decide to stay there permanently, Nigeria still remains our country and there’s little we can do to change that, if not nothing. We owe ourselves the obligation to make our lives and that of our children better. As much
as we want to deceive ourselves, we can go on saying the government is the one responsible to make our lives better, improve living standards and provide basic amenities, and the so called government can continue to fail us at every instance until we decide to help ourselves. My father will say over and over again, Heaven helps those who help themselves.
So the question is, Who wants a shot in the head? Who wants to risk his/her life in the face of terrorists and hope to survive and will then demand sympathy from the world before he/she starts an organization that will advocate for better living standards? Who wants to be a Malala before s/he realises that Life can be lost at any instant and should therefore be devoted to making an impact? Who wants to listen to a million and one reasons to be altruistic for the sake of one’s life and the life of one’s children and the generation unborn? OR Who wants to just live life and fade away for time immemorial without leaving any trace of having lived.
I honestly think to demand Patriotism from Nigerians at such a time as this is Folly but those who have changed their world and have left infallible marks in the sands of time have gone beyond sheer patriotism for their countries. At such a time as this, We need more than Patriots! Nigeria shall rise.
