The Victorious Ogbeni By Jose Akinlabi
The height of naivety was ignorantly displayed by those who predicted landslide for PDP candidate, Iyiola Omisore in Osun poll. The widely orchestrated sophism from their camp was weakly cradled by the irruption of PDP into the polity of Ekiti State. Those who are well clued on the dynamics of politics in the country know that a sudden wave of political change in a state may be unattainable in another state.
This clearly stresses the non-alignment of political situation in every state of the country. What this seeks to inform us is the impossibility of a political party to completely hold dominance in all states of the federation. A situation where the tiniest differences among our people decide who they support or oppose in an election impair the thought of victory for a single political party in all states. It shows illogicality on the part of political proponents to predict victory for a political party based on the party’s victory in another state.
The re-election of Ogbeni knocked out fallacies that were being peddled around by neophytes in politics ahead of the election. One of them sounded like a line in the Lord’s prayer “thy will be done in Osun as it is in Ekiti “. It later became instructive that political parties can be likened to gladiators who fight battles in different arenas and victory in one does not make defeat inevitable in the other.
The beauty of Osun election was the markedly divergent characters of the two notable actors involved in the contest. Ogbeni is always in the middle of controversies over his political programs. His re- classification of schools among many other laudable projects were tainted with religious sentiments oozing from unfounded allegation that he was pursuing Islamic agenda. Omisore on the other hand journeyed on the path of redemption as the painful tales of Ige’s murder whirled around his personality. A lot of convictions were dished out to further clear his name not minding the court’s verdict that pronounced him innocent. It however seemed his arch-enemies were injected with a thousand demons which made them appeared unrepentant in the mission to besmirch him beyond repair. He remained unelectable in the face of the trending campaigns which were denting huge blows on his image.
All the roles played by various stakeholders in the build-up to the election, the claims and counter- claims may be of interest at a later day.As of now, the die is cast and the accompanied glee is on the face of the victor. The victory of Ogbeni accentuates the unstinting support he enjoys from good number of Osun indigenes. He is a personage in Osun politics irrespective of controversies that always trail his political programs. His comical outings glamorize his position as the governor of the state giving it the clear outlook of his exuberant nature despite his ascension.
Ogbeni should consolidate on his achievements and reciprocate the massive support he received from people of Osun. That he garnered the votes of people on the streets should be a lone reason to further embark on projects that will not only further endear him to them but better their lives.
The intricacies of what transpired before and during the election can be left for political scientists to decipher. It was just interesting to observe the direction which the people of Osun headed.Strongly, they have spoken and we must show deference.
Congratulations to Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola as he steers the ship of Osun State for another four years.
