Still On the Hike in the Prices of Transport by Rail
The United Action for Democracy (UAD), Lagos State Chapter on 2nd June 2014 in a press statement demanded that the proposed hike in prices of transport be discarded by government given that travel by rail was most accessed by the poor, working and toiling people whose conditions of existence were already excruciating.
As un-listening as the Federal government has remained, this demand was ignored and thus government began the inhuman and insensitive implementation of the new prices regime today.
The Federal Government acting through the Minister of Transport and the ousted chairman of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, now chairman of the Railway Corporation when commissioning Air-conditioned trains in Lagos insisted that the hike in the prices of transport by rail were not reversible!
This insensitive position of government led to mass protests this morning at Itoki, Ijoko and Alagbado Railway Stations. The protests which led to the anger of the poor commuters that access rail transport and other sympathisers witnessed the vandalizing of the newly commissioned air-conditioned trains, burn fires and rallies to make their rejection of the inhuman hike known to government.
Tear-gas and gun shots were used to disperse the protesters at the different locations with many sustaining injuries.
While we insist and demand for a reversal of the hike in prices of transport by rail to the old prices, we also insist that government become more pro-poor, pro-working and toiling people in policy development.
We declare our unequivocal solidarity and support for the struggle against the nonsensical hike in the prices of travel by rail! We encourage the people who are directly affected to organise to fight this exploitative hike in a well-coordinated manner. We need to mobilise, educate and act against this government insensibility!!
