Unfavorable Security Reports Forced Jonathan to Cancel Planned Visit to Sokoto State
It has emerged that President Jonathan’s planned visit to Sokoto, seat of the caliphate was cancelled due to security reports which indicate that suspected Boko Haram members had stormed the state with a view to launch massive suicide attacks that will disrupt Mr President’s visit.
Earlier, the Deputy Controller of Prisons in charge of the Sokoto Central Prison, Alhaji Usman Gwandu was shot dead by gunmen believed to be members of the Boko Haram sect
Abusidiqu.com was reliably informed that the killing of the Prisons controller at SARDA Quarters within Sokoto metropolis by suspected Boko Haram gunmen at about 10pm local time was a confirmation of the initial intelligence reports presented to Mr Jonathan to persuade him to shelve the fence mending trip.
President Jonathan had planned the visit as a fence mending effort with the Sultan of Sokoto, Sokoto, Abubakar Sa’ad 111 and other concerned northerners following the recently strained cordial relationship between them, when the president publicly rubbished the call by the respected monarch and islamic leader to grant amnesty to the sect members. Many northerners and muslims had viewed the treatment meted out to the Sultan by the president as unfair.
The president had been scheduled to visit the state Wednesday. Two teams of reconnaissance and an advance party scheduled to depart for Sokoto Tuesday morning were quietly dispersed after they had assembled with the intention of going ahead of the president.
