Truism Of Human Fallibility In The Making Of A Lawful Society Under The Leadership Of Muhammadu Buhari, By AbdulRahman Agboola
Law could be very tardy in reacting to changing attitudes, but the process of attitudinal changes requires an acceptance of human fallibility and imperfections irrespective of the moral state of the conscience of the people in general. In our appreciations of macadam, we tend to forget its composition of layers of broken stones since the tar used is a finished product.
The task of making Nigeria a lawful society is highly herculean considering the poor level of orientation among the downtrodden themselves. Public officers are hired with handsome earnings even for services not rendered, yet they earn praises from the same people impoverished by their self-serving actions. With this ugly trend, the fundamental rights of people have practically turned to privileges as the sense of patriotism among the masses got exchanged with loyalties to public office holders for pecuniary gains of individuals.
In a situation where top public opinions are products of wishful thoughts and vendetta, the pursuance of collective agenda suffers serious setbacks especially when laws gets twisted due to inequitable discharge in the justice system. Sanctions and convictions are designed as deterrent measures to keep the populace at bay, but the misapplications of sanctions has increased criminalities in our societies at large with clear realities on the state of insecurity in Nigeria.
The foundation of good governance is the efficiency of laws and orders; the change mantra got the acceptability of the populace on this strength and the result was the emergence of President Muhammadu Buhari as the immediate hope to return sanity into the polity, but a thorough evaluation of the rot in our system clearly reveals the urgent need for leading opinion leaders to use their psychics to positively change the psyches of the disoriented masses and collectively brace up for the challenges of rebuilding this Country.
If President Muhammadu Buhari must succeed in leading this Country to greatness, the need for Nigerians to adhere to best practices must not be ignored. The glaring reality is that numerous among categories of personalities that contributed to the emergence of Muhammadu Buhari acted based on necessity and not sincerity of purpose, though with little exceptions, it has been proved that power absolutely corrupts the mind and most of the public office holders in Nigeria whether past or present cannot be exonerated from their ugly roles in the poor state of this Country.
Saying it as it is, very few public office holders can survive integrity test in Nigeria and it is only the degree of their fraudulent actions that either categorize the actions of personality A or B as either misdemeanour or grievous. Even in the spiritual temple of justice, when your positive actions clearly outweighs your negative actions, the earlier prevails as human imperfections are considered in judgment.
A simple reference to buttress this argument will be linked to the two greatest men in modern history (Prophets Muhammad (SAW) and Jesus Christ). When both of them ascended the status of prophets and commenced evangelism, they made converts from among willing sinners that admitted their flaws, converted them to dedicated and faithful adherents of best practices under the new order they brought and the result is obvious.
Every new administration deserves a minimum of three months’ probation to appraise situations and clearly set agenda for the administration. President Muhammadu Buhari has definitely set the bench mark for appointments of helping hands hold positions and the target is integrity with emphasis on corrupt free Nigerians among technocrats and politicians. Without been immodest, such people are rare in Nigeria among tested personalities with high pedigree and Mr President must be ready to make converts on trust if he will not allow human fallibility to equally push him into trial and error of entirely appointing untested personalities with lower pedigrees.
In getting the nod of President Muhammadu Buhari for appointment into government, politicians and technocrats are now at loggerheads exposing their frailties and those respected champions of the movement that made this new administration a reality are suddenly becoming morally naked. We have witnessed series of revelations or fabrications against Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Rotimi Amaechi, Bukola Saraki, Raji Fashola and a host of others presently in the court of public opinions as it relates to their expected roles under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari.
These personalities under attack have the rights to prove their innocence as alleged or apologise for their fallibilities during their reigns in office but I don’t view them above redemption as the risk they took in chasing away the last administration is strong enough to get a pardon in the court of public opinions but they must be swift in addressing the issues as the personalities they all conspired to chase away are ready to pull them down as well.
These personalities are not saints but do not constitute threats to the return of sanity into the polity if only the masses will get our priorities correct. Since we have reposed our confidence in the integrity of President Muhammadu Buhari, I have refrained from either commending or condemning these personalities for any action or inaction as I remain resolute in my belief that the only solution to problem of governance in Nigeria is our collective readiness for the efficiency of rule of law under this administration.
But considering the truism of human fallibility in the making of a lawful society under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari, the recovery of our common wealth stolen under the watch of the last administration either at the Federal or State Level is a task that must be fulfilled. Necessary records have shown that most of the stolen funds are traceable and the priority should be the recovery within the shortest possible time to improve the sovereign wealth of the Country.
As at last count, our security agencies are still enmesh in corrupt practices especially the act of extortion and bribery, the rate of illegal possession of firearms particularly by thugs remains unchecked and keeping the people safe both at homes and communities should be the priority of government. Instead of committing our precious times and energies into smear and calumny campaign, we should preserve our resources into the return of efficient Local Government Administration where criminalities could be abated from the grassroots.
The collapse of Local Government Administration in Nigeria is partly responsible for many misnomers in our polity, ranging from high poverty rate, insecurity and election manipulations. If the responsibility of conducting Local Government Elections is returned to INEC, the excesses of State Governors manipulating results of local government elections for their cronies or appointments of Caretakers for Local Governments will be checkmated. Using Local Government Administrations as a case study, virtually all former Governors and leading politicians in Nigeria will not survive integrity test.
It is my fervent hope that Nigerians will not be carried away or distracted by the tussle and power struggle among political gladiators but be resolute in our crave for a better society under President Muhammadu Buhari who seriously needs our understanding on rotten situation he inherited and having secured our mandate on trust, he truly deserves our unalloyed support and confidence to steer the affairs of this Country to greatness.
