Top Boko Haram Member, Mohammed Sani Allegedly Escape from Police Custody in Abuja. Its is not True, says Police
The report which was aired by the Independent Television Authority indicates that Muhammed Sani, who was arrested alongside Kabiru Sokoto in January escaped from the custody of the Special Anti-robbery Squad (SARS) on Wednesday night.
Muhammed Sani According to the report has become familiar with police officers in the squad, who allows him free access to telephone calls, sumptuous meals from relatives and even the freedom to pray outside the premises of the police anti robbery squad.
In a swift reaction however, the Police high command denied the media report that a top Boko Haram member in person of Muhammed Sani escaped from its custody in Abuja.
Below is a statement by the police command
PRESS RELEASE: ALLEGED ESCAPE OF TOP BOKO HARAM MEMBER, MOHAMMED SANI FROM POLICE CUSTODY IN ABUJA:…….IT IS NOT TRUE
The attention of the Police High Command has been drawn to a News flash being relayed by African Independent Television (AIT), Abuja. The Television station today 8th November, 2012, alleged the escape from Police custody in Abuja, of one Mohammed Sani purported to be a top Boko Haram member.
The Police authority hereby informs the public that the information being circulated by the aforementioned TV Station is totally untrue and should be disregarded in its entirety.
No suspect whatsoever, especially in connection with terrorism-related crimes, escaped from any of our detention facilities in Abuja or any part of Nigeria. In addition, a meticulous check of our records shows that no such name as Mohammed Sani or even Sani Mohammed is in our custody.
The media is once again reminded of its very important role in stabilizing our nation’s democracy. Therefore, acts of deliberate falsehood of this magnitude could unnecessarily heat up the polity and spread unfounded fears among the citizens. This we believe should be avoided by all men of good will.
Meanwhile, the IGP wishes to reassure Nigerians of the readiness and willingness of the Nigeria Police Force to continue to discharge its constitutional and statutory responsibility effectively. He therefore enjoins the public to continue to co-operate and collaborate with the Force in these regards.
