On May 29, 2015, what many analysts thought was impossible in the history of Nigeria’s democracy, came to pass like a dream. A seating government was thumb-printed-out of power by a popular vote in the 2015 general elections.
That victory saw the All Peoples Congress (APC) in and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) out of governance became what till now is being described as the colossal collapse of the wall that saw the commonwealth of the Nigerian nation in the pockets and bank accounts of a few politicians who belonged to the then ruling party.
It is very fresh in our memories that the era when PDP mounted the helm of affairs in Nigeria was a period when accountability,as far as public funds was concerned became a strange language that none of those manning political powers then knew how to speak nor able to comprehend. It became so bad that accountability in theory and practice got missing from our from our national operations. This word was copiously replaced by a phrase that echoed round the nation. The phrase, “PDP! Share the money” was on the lips of many Nigerians, both old and young while public infrastructures and utilities were decaying beyond redemption.
The era of “PDP, share the money” witnessed a looming dark days for Nigeria. The Academic Staff Union of Universities went on the longest strike in the history of labour unrest in Nigeria, the totality of Nigeria’s oil refineries went systematically moribund, oil racketeering in the name of subsidy and oil swap became the order of the day even as plausibly the global oil market witnessed a peak in the prices at the international sales outlets. The era of “PDP, share the money” did not just abandon the security of life and properties of Nigerians in the hands of those who saw continued insecurity as a fertile ground to milk the nation dry but additionally, the era laid a solid foundation for most of the security challenges being witnessed across the nation today.
In fact, the Boko Haram insurgency then became what warrants serious minded Nigerians to write their wills while leaving home in the morning because they are not sure of their safe return home each day. It was a near-war situation for many Nigerians In different parts of the country.
President Mohammadu Buhari came into power at a critical stage in the history of Nigeria, but like a surgeon in the theatre, with an unprecedented determination, he launched himself and his team into action, not minding the rot they met on ground. Bringing Nigeria back to the track of development became a thing of words and action.
No nation can survive and develop in the face of a near-war security situation.
That is why the Buhari-led administration left no stone unturned to dislodge the Boko Haram sect who held Nigeria hostage for years. It marked a departure from an era of lip service to salvaging the soul of Nigeria. Soon after the Buhari administration lunched a determined war against insecurity, many of the Chibok girls that were abducted during Jonathan administration were returned and rejoined their family members.
In the same vein, the hydra-headed monster called corruption was tackled with a determination of a leader with a mission. The administration of President Mohammed Buhari did not only chase Nigeria’s looted funds to commercial banks across Nigeria, funds kept in foreign banks were pursued with the strength of a visionary leader – a leader who believe in a Nigeria where the common man should have a legitimate share of the nation’s resources.
In fact, President Buhari’s war against corruption in the last three years has seen billions of naira retrieved from homes and farms of cronies of the former administrations. Such unspent billions of naira that the Buhari Administration has wrestled from the hands of looters are still in the treasury of government waiting for completion of legal mandates before Nigerians can begin to enjoy the dividends of their wealth which had been stolen by a few heartless individuals who before now were at the corridors of powers.
By operationalising T.S.A by the Buhari administration, conduit pipes for siphoning public funds has been permanently closed and the government had been able to save moneys running into billions of naira within three years. One assurance Nigerians enjoy during the ongoing Buhari administration is the fact that prudency and accountability has come to stay in the governance of their nation.
The agricultural sector has received an unprecedented boost during the last three years. Farmlands which hitherto had been abandoned across Nigeria for “share the money” syndrome are now being cultivated in a manner that is almost guaranteeing food sufficiency for the entire populace.
There is no gain saying the fact that since Buhari came into power, Nigeria and Nigerians have enjoyed a positive and respectable treatment in the hands of members of international communities. Most nations of the world now see a government and leader that is serious and worth doing business with in President Mohammed Buhari. This is responsible for Nigeria’s high rating among the committee of nations across the world today.
As Nigeria celebrates democracy day today, the Buhari Patriotic Movement joins the President and Commander In Chief of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Mohammadu Buhari, the entire members of the great party APC in telling Nigerians that this administration is more than ever before committed to their welfare irrespective of ethnic, religious and political affiliation or differences.
We also want to use this opportunity to tell the opposition that the Buhari’s administration is cognizance of their existence. Their determined effort to hijack the leadership of the country once again using destructive criticisms and manipulations that this administration and Nigerians are well familiar with is well noted. But one thing is sure, Nigerians are wiser than they were years back. Nigerians have refused to buy into a ploy to drown the smooth sailing ship of Nigeria under President Mohammadu Buhari administration. History shall vindicate the just, Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria!
