Them Against US: The Nigerian Definition of Corruption, By Adamu Auta
What this write up intends to highlight is the fact that we fellow Nigerians needs to understand that for an individual to be tagged a corrupt person he does not have to be involved in public office alone, those little day to day activities we engage in, if looked into critical they also fuel corruption and with such attitude, when you become a public official you would have no choice than to involve yourself in corporate corruption.
Before I list out those corrupt activities we engage in knowingly or unknowingly permit me to expansiate what I feel actual drives us as an individual to engage in corrupt activities.
The world is a stage in which every individual plays his or her own role, these roles defines who we are, what we stand for and the legacy we leave behind for the future generation to judge us with. Any Nigerian that you come across, when asked what is the major problem bedeviling this Nation of ours the obvious answer is CORRUPTION, But we tend to forget what begeth this Corruption? In elementary Economics we were taught some basic concept like Scarcity, Want etc. Scarcity: when resources are not available for everyone the little one becomes a war in which only strong survive, whoever gets this resources (JOB) would want for himself and for his family alone and by doing so others suffer. Want: A situation where we want what we can’t have and we are also ready to do whatever it takes to get what we cant have, the only viable option is to to take what is not yours (steal = corruption) .
Using the sociologist/ criminologist Robert K Merton Strain theory which proponents lay emphasis mostly on *the dreams of opportunity, freedom and prosperity* negates a person to try to get what he cant have just to meet up with societal demands as he Merton puts it “The American Dream” which we allow know is what every Nigerian strive to be since our society is model towards full blown Capitalism but we love to sugercoat it so we call it Mix Economy. This strain the society puts in you (the individual) in relation to what is actually attainable will only lead to a person to deter from the norm of the society which would lead to Stealing of those Scarce resources to meet up with the Demands rested on his Shoulder.
Using the above postulation we can see that scarcity, want and society strain tends to lead someone into corrupt activities in other words Impunity( power, availability of resources at your disposal) GREED (WANT) fuel corruption.
Now back to the topic of the day WHAT IS CORRUPTION? Is Corruption an activity done by only Politicians and Public office holders? The fight for justice against corruption is never easy. It never has been and never will be. It exacts a toll on our self, our families, our friends, and especially our children. In the end, I believe, as in my case, the price we pay is well worth holding on to our dignity. – Frank Serpico.?
If a country is to be corruption free and become a nation of beautiful minds, I strongly feel there are three key societal members who can make a difference. They are the father, the mother and the teacher. – A. P. J. Abdul Kalam
