The Riggers Finally Come Home to Roost, By Muhammed Jimoh
If anyone still doubts that we have an assembly of minions as governor all these while, the event of past weeks should clear such reservation. The fall-out of the election to the Chairmanship of the Nigeria governor forum (NGF)-a cult of 36 oppressors-with very few exception, tells much about the people at the helms of our affairs in the various states.
Lackeys who have been masquerading as democrats were suddenly unmasked. Charlatan who some people have considered intelligent and progressive showed their true colours. Many Nigerians still over-burdened themselves with question of how election between 35 people could generate such controversy. That is a pill for those who believed in them as democrats to swallow.
The fact is what they now do openly-imposition of candidate, announcing of false result, swearing-in a defeated candidate, presenting forged documents-are all what we have known for long. For them now removing any shade of doubt is just the case of the riggers having come home to roost
It is still only here that supposed democratically elected leaders can be so brazenly shameless in the denial of an issue that is so obvious. The grandstanding and puerile explanations some of them offer are far below what one even expects from someone on his way to the intensive care unit of a psychiatric ward. “Show evidence that I voted”, “We could have done it the Nigeria way by smashing boxes”, “’God’ endorses rigging” and “It is northern turn”. Nigerians, are these your leaders?
The gullible Nigerian public who are easily hoodwinked by this type of ego-driven fight should wise up and not make a hero out of either faction. It is the case of one inordinately ambitious group outsmarting another. How will a northern chairman of a useless cult change the security situation in the north? How will it reduce the ravaging poverty in the land? The same people who now line up behind Jonah Jang and say it is northerner turn were the same set of people who withdrew youth corps members and the citizens of their states from the North, and Plateau in particular, saying it was too dangerous. The security situation has not become better.
It is not hard to see through that the characters in the loser camp have common trait of pettiness, fraud and cluelessness. The other camp is not far better, but they are the wiser demons in this needless controversy propelled by personal ego. Let us make a dissection of some of these characters and see why they are doing what they do presently.
Jonah Jang of Plateau state, the head of the defeated charlatans, is not unknown to controversy. A man who set his state on fire out of jealous and rabid ethnicity should not surprise anyone leading a shameless renegade group. I don’t know how his becoming the chairman of NGF solves the insecurity in his state. At seventy year of age what one expects of him is to retire to becoming a statesman and be a bridge builder. But, rather, he prefers courting troubles and beating the drum of war.
Is anyone surprise that Isa Yuguda of Bauchi state is among this group again? Has he ever had a stable loyalty? He rode on the back of Buhari to become governor having fled from Obasanjo; then jumped Buhari’s ship to marry the daughter of Buhari’s opponent, Late President Yar’adua, to consolidate his ascension to power. And while his father in-law, Late Yar’adua, was sick, he was among those coordinating the Abuja cabal that rendered Jonathan useless. But when Yar’adua died, he was among the first to quickly switch allegiance to Jonathan. Let us defeat Jonathan in 2015 and you will see that this man is never short of vacillating loyalty. Instead of his ambition-driven support for Jang, he should have coordinated with the latter on how to re-settle much Jos residence who now resides in Bauchi as refugees.
If anybody can beat his chest as the only rival to Yuguda in the art of wavering loyalty, it is Ibrahim Shema of Katsina state. The duo has so much in common in the art of switching allegiance. Yar’adua removed all obstacle for him to becoming the governor of Katsina state. On clinching the governorship, he soon found out that Yar’adua did not worth his loyalty. So, it was not difficult for him to finding a new godfather in Jonathan when Yar’adua passed away. He and Yuguda, his co arrow-head of the group advancing Jonathan re-election bid on the northern front, stepped down for Jang to contest the NGF election that has generated needless furor. Katsina state is treated as personal property by the governor and his wife. While his wife, who holds no constitutional function, can recommends the sack of local government staff, the governor can build house for government official of Niger republic at the expense of Katsinawas.
The governor of Kogi state, Idris Wada, is sure to be among these retrogressive. Has anyone ever seen him in a serious forum? He is the only governor I have seen attending all function even where his colleagues send in commissioner as representative. Idris Wada is among those whose desire for second term has turned into an errand boy. Disaster is the first name of anybody whose political godfather is Ibrahim Idris, another equally fatal accident that happened to Kogi state. It is unfortunate that Kogi state has been passing from one disastrous undertaker to another since its creation.
What about Yobe state Ibrahim Geidam? This is the governor who abandoned his state to Boko Haram and fled to Abuja. While he conducts the affairs of his state from Abuja, his commissioners and the legislators are scattered across neighbouring states to Yobe because of insecurity, as was revealed by Sam Nda Isaiah. The security challenge in Yobe state is enough to set anyone who claims to be the governor of that state on his toe to solving the issue. Rather, he set on his toe to Abuja to live in comfort and leave the state to the mercy of Boko haram and sundry criminals. He being among this group may not be unconnected to a second term ambition. How would he have the control of the state he abandoned for Boko Haram after 2015 beat my imagination?
Few weeks before the NGF crisis, Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom state had been in the news for the bad reasons; from openly saying something like “I rigged in a senator” to dashing out one million naira each to PDP executive as lunch money. When people say he has tried in infrastructural development, as if he was doing that from his pocket, nobody asked how much was accruing to the state. The document the loser camp is brandishing as evidence of their triumphalism has the trace of forgery with Akpabio as the Esau’s hand. As a confessed election rigger and, now, a document forger, he fits nowhere than where he presently belongs.
Always appearing like an huge Eyo masquerade without a mask, Seriake Dickson is the latest marionette in a government house. Perhaps, he has every reason to pitch tent with this camp. Your ‘oga’s’ interest should also be your interest. A governor whose major ‘achievement’ is the ‘promotion’ of Patience Jonathan, the President’s wife, from first lady to permanent secretary cannot be a serious soul. But, if these are the kind of characters the south-south is producing as leaders, then every geo-political region is its own problem.
Peter Obi, the self-acclaimed new Igbo leader and ancestor, should not surprise anyone that he belongs to this faction, because haughtiness is also the group’s label. Sometimes last year when his state budget was analyzed and a fail verdict was returned, he said the whole Igbo race had been insulted. Severally, he has told Ndigbos that only him decides their fate as per the issue of their quest for presidency. He would ask an Ndigbo to contest only when Jonathan decides not to seek re-election. But as long as Jonathan is interested in contesting 2015 election, Peter Obi has delivered Ndigbo to him. His first proof of loyalty to Jonathan is therefore to impose a Jonathan candidate, Jang, on NGF. As the true leaders of Ndigbo, all the south east governors lined behind him with the exception of Rochas Okorocha of Imo state.
If people are really saddened by the action the Jang camp, one member whose madness so quickly degenerated to the level of a street lunatic is Ondo state governor Olusegum Mimiko. Many people who say they have withdrawn their respect for him for being so infantile in the defense of shamelessness have not been paying attention to the wise saying that it is not how someone started but how he ends. The utterances of Mimiko recently has shown that the man is more PDP that the so called PDP governors. But how those who have looked up to this man as a progressive will be able to stomach his recent decent to imbecility remains a puzzle to one and sundry. It still remain an irony how people who ride on destiny or on Nigerian people’s feeling of goodwill, sentiments and sympathy to become what they are transform so quickly to becoming haughtily useless. Examples abound in Jonathan, Yuguda, Mimiko, Peter Obi, Geidam, etc. As for Ramalan Yero of Kaduna state and Garba Usman of Taraba state, the coming days will show who really they are.
Is anybody still amazed why these men are together?
