The Many Mouth of Opeyemi Bamidele… A Pathological Liar by Ejana Fish
Having been following recent developments in Ekiti State, especially as regards the lawmaker representing Ekiti Central Federal Constituency 1, Michael Opeyemi Bamidele, one cannot sit on the fence as a patriotic Ekiti indigene, as there have been many lies, which if left un-attended to, may be taken as the truth in some quarters. Adolf Hitler’s Minister of Propaganda, Joseph Goebbels said a lie told repeatedly can be overtime taken as the truth by the unsuspecting public. This is why the arrays of lies that have arisen out of Michael Opeyemi’s self-hyped governorship ambition must be attended to.
Michael Opeyemi Bamidele’s rapacity and lack of satisfaction which of course was not borne out of a thirst for knowledge, but an innate dissatisfaction with whatever he has, like a child who has his own toy, but greedily takes the toys of his mates, can be traced to his early days at the then University of Ife, Ile-Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University OAU) where he was admitted to study Religious Studies. Having completed his studies at OAU, he applied to study Law at the University of Benin. One would think he was in pursuit of more knowledge, but his personality trait of greed was the driving force, evident in his inability to practise since he graduate and was called to the bar. He has never practised as a lawyer; neither does he have a chamber in Nigeria. If he argues otherwise, I challenge MOB to name the address of his chamber in Nigeria for the public to verify. If you ask MOB, he would tell you he has his chamber in the US, but he should tell us how many cases his chamber has handled in the US since the establishment of the so-called chamber. The simple truth is that MOB has no knowledge of a profession you would think he has passion for. Anyone who is familiar with the legal profession would quickly draw this conclusion when MOB appeared several times at the 2007 and 2009 re-run governorship elections tribunal, wearing a wig, forgetting, like the half-baked lawyer that he is, that you don’t wear a wig to a tribunal as it is not a regular court. MOB probably studied Law because he thought that was the only way he could be popular. Unfortunately, MOB’s mates at Ife who studied the same course as he did find fulfilment. One of such people is Sanya Awosan, a Special Adviser in the Presidency.
It is this same greed which characterised his tenure as commissioner in Lagos State. Early into the Tinubu administration, MOB had started nursing a governorship ambition and was already printing, distributing and pasting posters with the inscription “Think of This Boy”. One would wonder then where he wanted to rule, probably to upstage Tinubu, the man who made him or maybe he had started thinking about Ekiti which he would not even visit then. It took him years to even consider building a house in Ekiti State that was after, according to him, he had become the owner of 32 houses across the world.
One of the lies Opeyemi is currently spinning is that he and Fayemi had an agreement that the latter should spend one term in office and then let the former (MOB) step in. He also claimed to have introduced Fayemi to Asiwaju Bola Tinubu. According to him, Tinubu had summoned him and Rauf Aregbesola to go and contest in their respective states, but MOB claimed he decline on the excuse that he was not known in Ekiti then. Before I move even further, let me ask some kindergarten questions:
If MOB claimed that he did not agree to contest as Ekiti governor in 2007 because he was not known, the question is, was Rauf Aregbesola, who agreed to contest in Osun well-known in Osun State then? How many Ekiti people even knew Fayemi, who MOB claimed to have asked to stand in his place, then? If Fayemi and Rauf could then contest, though they were not well-known, why didn’t MOB agree to contest rather than let Fayemi who was also not known to contest in his place?
If he really had an agreement with Dr. Fayemi, why did he start printing posters with the inscription “Always Pray For This Boy” one year into the Fayemi administration? Does this mean that Fayemi had already told him the agreement could no longer stand then? It was about this time that he started selling lies about a phantom agreement between him and Fayemi to the people. It was also around this time that he started trying to bribe government officials to betray their principal (the Governor). Unfortunately, all these blew up in his face as people told him to find something better to do with his money. This was the turning point or what behaviour profilers would call the stressor, like a trigger which set Opeyemi Bamidele off. He saw the impossibility of his ambition and then became self-destructively desperate. This only led to more insane lies.
Looking at MOB closely and critically, the way he has been disparaging the Fayemi administration and the way he, despite the decision of the party leadership, appealed three consecutive times against the party’s decision that Babafemi Ojudu should run for the Senate, does he look like someone who could introduce anyone to be governor? Does he even look like anyone who could pave way for the success of anyone? Opeyemi was in the Lagos State Government for 12 twelve years, minus the years he was PA to Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, let MOB identify 5 Iyin-Ekiti (not even Ekiti) people that he helped in anyway. People who knew him then would know that he would never pick his calls, neither would he attend to Ekiti people who went to his office for assistance. All this while, he probably never thought of ever coming to contest in Ekiti, so why would he care to help anyone from here?
Isn’t it suspicious how overnight he suddenly developed his newfound love for Ekiti, a State he had never cared about or helped anyone from in all of his twelve years in the Lagos State Government? Isn’t it suspicious and funny that it was only when he wanted to contest that he remembered to come and celebrate his birthday in Ekiti? He would not even celebrate it here during the struggle to reclaim the mandate of Dr. Kayode Fayemi. He would only burst in at the tribunal once in a while with his wig. What a lawyer! Opeyemi would never do anything as service to humanity. To him, everything is politics. This was why he donated a paltry sum to the family of late Chris Fajemifo and turned it into a campaign point, blaring it all over the news and blabbing about it to anyone who cared to listen. If he had any conscience, he wouldn’t have done that to Chris Fajemifo, a fellow Ife alumnus with whom he had a relationship that spanned several years.
Part of Opeyemi’s character trait is congenital lying. His lies clearly show him as an unrepentant and a pathological liar. When you look at him, you would think he never sucked from his mother’s breasts the way he lies. This same man said Major Awe, who is a Local Government Caretaker Chairman on the platform of the A C N took hoodlums in his car and attacked him in Igede, but days later, he turned around to say he never said ACN members attacked him. Is Awe a PDP member? So much for bare-faced lies!
At the inception of his tenure at the House of Representatives, he promised to be donating half of his salary as a scholarship fund while the other half would be donated to the party secretariat. Unfortunately, MOB cannot come out to beat his chest that he had given any money to the secretariat. I challenge him to prove me wrong. His over-hyped scholarship fund is so controversial that the monarch of his home town, the Oluyin of Iyin, Oba Ajakaye, had to resign to spare himself of the shame. MOB only dropped his salary once, but typical of him, he has since been making noise about giving scholarship to indigent students in his constituency, but those probably are ghosts. If MOB argues otherwise, I challenge him to print the names of those he gave scholarship and also present them to the whole world to see, including the evidence of payment. Enough with the lies!!!
As if this was not enough, he has been blabbing about attracting a N16 worth health centre to Igbemo-Ekiti, I challenge MOB to point out where this non-existent health centre is located in Igbemo-Ekiti. The whole world should also endeavour to find out for themselves.
He claims to have sunk a borehole at Oluyin’s palace; this is another lie, same as his dreamy N32 million worth ICT which also does not exist anywhere on the face of this planet. What a promise-keeper, or should I say lie-spinner?
Ekiti is aware of the exploits of MOB’s counterparts from Ekiti State in the House of Representatives. All the projects of Honourable Ife Arowosoge are physical, real and can be seen in all the local governments in his constituency: Ekiti Southwest, Ikere and Ise/Orun. Same goes for Honourable Oyetunde Ojo who represents Ekiti Central Federal Constituency II. The whole world witnessed the event where Oyetunde doled out dividends of democracy to his constituents. His other projects are also visible.
Unlike these two, MOB’s projects are on radio and TV. He spins all these lies because he assumes people would not bother to cross-check the facts, especially Ekiti indigenes living outside the state. Unlike MOB, Arowosoge has 32 wards and he has been able to have meaningful projects. Same goes for Oyetunde whose constituency comprises 33 wards, but he has touched the lives of the people in these wards. MOB’s constituency has only 24 wards, yet rather than think up meaningful projects in these areas, he’d rather create non-existent projects. He should pick a date to take members of this forum and any other curios observer to see these projects he claims to have attracted to his constituency.
Despite this shameful show of shame, Opeyemi Bamidele still had the guts, in his last press statement, to say people celebrate him as a hero. Well, Bode George was celebrated as a hero before he was jailed for financial impropriety. Alameiseigha was also celebrated. It is a known fact in politics that anyone who doles out money to miscreants will always have them around him. These are the thugs that celebrate MOB as their hero. As they say, birds of a feather flock together.
And this brings us to the issue that he spent N4 billion to bankroll the legal battles of Dr. Fayemi at the tribunal and the Appeal Court. One must first ask how he got N4 billion, knowing what a commissioner earns in Lagos. This could only mean one thing: MOB stole government money in Lagos. This would be so as he never worked outside of government all his life. If MOB could drain Lagos of N4 billion, how would Ekiti State, which barely manages to get by, survive his pilfering skills? One can only imagine what would happen to Ekiti under him.
Just like he studied Law not because he wanted to practise, but because of his greedy personality trait, he probably wants to be Ekiti governor for the fun of it and because it is in his character to cause confusion wherever he is. It is on record that NANS started having factions when he was caretaker chairman of the students’ body. His lack of organisational ability and inability to be loyal to his friends was responsible for the division that started in NANS under him. This factionalisation would plague NANS for years.
It is this same confusion that MOB intends to bring to Ekiti, to ACN, but he is being seen for what he has always been, a demagogue and a serial liar, one with no iota of conscience.
In his convoluted press conference, he accused Major Awe of not knowing what obtains in the National Assembly, implying that Dr. Fayemi appointed people who are not knowledgeable. Besides the fact that the Fayemi administration parades the best brains in the history of Ekiti State, Major Awe, the caretaker chairman of Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government is an accomplished military officer who, due to his outstanding service, was able to make it to the officer cadre, in the same army where some were never even commissioned. Major Awe has never been a member of the National Assembly, yet, unlike MOB claims, he knows what obtains there. Michael Opeyemi Bamidele who, however, claims to be a lawyer, did not know a lawyer does not wear a wig to a tribunal, as he always ignorantly appeared at the 2007 and 2009 governorship election petition tribunal in Ekiti in his wig.
The same applies to Adesokan Adedeji, popularly known as Jaruu, who served in the State Security Service meritoriously for ten years. He was part of the Government House security team during the Fayose administration. It was, however, Fayose’s paranoia because he hails from Iyin-Ekiti, same town as Otunba Niyi Adebayo, that led to his unjust transfer to Lagos State. When he indicated to be part of the Fayemi team at the start of the 2007 campaign, he had to resign since this would conflict with his oath as an SS officer. Adesokan’s sterling service record is not a secret; it is there for everyone to access, in fact he has posted his credentials including his certificates of award of meritorious service to the internet.
It is, however, hypocrisy on the part of MOB to accuse anyone of appointing incompetent people when in fact that’s his forte. His media aide, Ahmed Salami, though he claims to be a journalist, cannot write a single correct statement. He depends on some newspaper correspondents in Ekiti to help him write his boss’ press statement, and this is not without MOB’s knowledge. It was because of this incompetence that he was sacked from TV Continental in Lagos. The record is there. This same Ahmed defrauded people, promising to help them apply to foreign schools. Like his boss, it turned out to be a phantom scheme to defraud the unsuspecting people. He was in a police cell for weeks for this fraud. MOB does not only employ incompetent people; he also employs fraudsters, probably to mentor them more in the art of lying, mudslinging and pilfering.
A word of advice for Opeyemi Bamidele. If he is naive enough to lie about everything, he should leave out the pro-democracy struggle which he claims to have been part of. It is on record that MOB ran to the US with his tales between his legs. Even in the US, he contributed nothing to the struggle. He should tell the whole world the role he played during the struggle. But typical of his style, he likes riding on other people’s fame and achievements. This is the philosophy behind the blasphemy he titled “Meet MOB” which he distributes to people just to show off he enjoys a good relationship with the dignitaries in the pictures in the book. However, it doesn’t take a professional photographer to know that he hugged most of those people without their consent, and the way he looked at the camera reveals the fraud behind the pictures. They were not spontaneous pictures. They were pre-planned. In most of the pictures, he seems to be eyeing the photography to shoot away before those people escape his greedy claws. His eyes seem to be saying to the photographer: “Take this picture on time before this person goes away”. It doesn’t take a behaviour expert to figure out this.
Despite Dr. Kayode Fayemi’s pedigree and international connection, he never for once brandished any photograph with all the eminent people he is friends with. He believed in his own popularity and goodwill to see him through. It is only those with no sellable personality who cringe. Obviously, that is what MOB does best, especially with his false humility that sickens rather than amuses one.
If Opeyemi does not understand the rules and ethics of his profession, for which he was in the university for 5 years and the Law School for one year, but still wore a wig to a tribunal, what then does he understand about being a governor, something he had never done before. If he does not know the known, can he have any meaningful knowledge of the unknown?
Mark Twain wrote: “If you tell the truth, you don’t have to remember anything.” However, when you spin lies, you keep changing your stories on a daily basis. That is MOB’s style. He tells so many lies that he forgets what he says minutes ago, changing it minutes later. One can only pity him as he deserves prayers and pity; after all, it is his behavioural profile, which would take a miracle from God to change.
