The prospect of re-electing the member representing Lagos East Senatorial District, Senator Gbenga Ashafa in 2019 is seen as having more resonance.

Lagos East leaders Sunday threw their weight behind the senator for developing the senatorial district, advancing progressive ideas and empowering the people.

They also commended All Progressives Congress (APC) National Leader, Senator Bola Tinubu for his strong support on Ashafa.

“We are on track. The process of re-electing Ashafa in 2019 is expected to be a formality” the leaders said.

At a meeting to chalk out the position of the ruling party on the senatorial seat, the leaders from the five federal constituencies of the senatorial district distanced themselves from the senatorial ambition of Hon Sikiru Adebayo Osinowo.

Chairman, Lagos East Political Forum, Chief Ayo Adeyinka in a statement released in Ikorodu after the meeting said the leaders decided that Ashafa should represent the senatorial district in 2019 because of his sterling performance.

“Senator Ashafa is a blessing to Nigeria. He  is brokering the agenda of the South-West in the senate”

The leaders termed the 2019 senatorial election as very critical and one that will have far reaching impact, citing Ashafa’s grassroots acceptance, leadership qualities and contributions to the progress of the senatorial district.

The leaders lavished praise on the chairman, Senate Committee on Land Transport for contributing to the unity and growth of the country.

Specifically, they praised Ashafa for enhancing the welfare of members of his constituency, building classrooms, ICT centres and hall in the senatorial district, providing transformers and streetlights.

The leaders applauded Ashafa for bringing succor to the constituents through the award of the Ikorodu Shagamu Federal Road Project, free medical outreach programmes, social security schemes for elderly, financial empowerment for widows and widowers and agricultural entrepreneurship training programmes.

They also commended him for providing legislative support to the executive in achieving the complete turnaround of the Railway Sector in Nigeria, finding solutions to the challenges facing the Nigerian transport landscape and defending the China Exim Bank loan to finance rail project.

“Ashafa co-sponsored the motion on the preventable economic loss and national embarrassment accruing from the failure of the Federal Government to complete the National Library after 11 years, motion on the need to minimize the possibility of air mishaps and near fatalities in Nigeria and motion on the need to enforce stricter driving regulations against petrol tankers, traders and other articulated vehicles across Nigeria”

Ashafa Declares Re-Election Bid For Lagos East Senatorial Seat

In a recent interview with Gloomme Tv, the Senator representing Lagos East Senatorial District, Senator Gbenga Ashafa indicated he would be running for another term in the Senate. The Senator representing Lagos East senatorial District expressed confidence in his achievements as a senator both in legislative activities and the citing of meaningful projects in his constituency.
Well, It is not uncommon for pubic office holders to seek re-election particularly in the legislature, which has no term limits, but we will all agree that not all of them are worth being voted back into office especially due to under performance. However, there are those who stand out. Those whom their achievements speak for them and ought to have a smooth ride back into office to continue the work they have begun. This is the case with Senator Gbenga Ashafa.
In his words, Ashafa who hails from Ibeju – Lekki stated that “My constituents have shown me tremendous support and are offering to pick up my party’s nomination form to recontest the election on my behalf. Who then am I to say otherwise or to put down the faith they have in me by not running for another term”.
Speaking further, the Senator Stated that “The work I have been able to do speaks for itself. Whether it is by the way of legislative interventions like the Nigerian Railway Bill/various railway projects that are directly beneficial to Lagos State, the NIPOST bill, topical motions, or the various constituency intervention projects including ICT/skill acquisition programs, renovation of schools, portable water projects, upgrading of facilities at healthcare centres, several other scholarships and women empowerment programs amongst others; It is this understandable why they want me to run again”.
Senator Ashafa also praised Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his vision and leadership by taking the bold and unpopular step of nudging the party towards adopting an open primary system where every card carrying member of the party will have a stake in deciding to bears the flag of the party and not just a few delegates.
Asked about how he fancies his chances in the coming primaries against other tough contestants from Lagos East, Ashafa responded with confidence stating that “the mandate remains with the people. I have remained with them by ensuring that I deliver on the mandate I was given by my people. Their unyielding clamour that I return for another term, makes it clear that they have kept faith with me. I am confident of victory.”
Ashafa’s interview which has since gone viral on the social media, has generated a lot of positive reviews across board. It shows that he has maintained a connection with the younger demographic who have identified him as a transparent, engaging and model Senator.

2019: Towards A Vibrant, Experienced Representation For Lagos East In The Senate, By Tope Atiba

I have consistently argued, and not just for personal reasons, that experience in the national assembly is imperative and an invaluable asset to the party and the constituencies being represented. It takes considerable amount of time to be effective at law making, to understand the ropes, to move bills or motions and to have a grasp of the paraphernalia of goverance at the centre.

This explains why legislators are routinely trained to continuously build capacity in a bid to discharge their responsibilities dutifully. Need I say, that it costs a handful of Money to train federal legislators, and it would be pound foolish for the country not to profit from that investment.

The truth is, Senators like Ike Ekweremadu, Ahmed Lawan, or even Femi Gbajabiamila in the green chambers just to mention but a few, are able to push bills through faster in the Senate having gathered the requisite experience and the wit for sensible politicking.

Their political party and the constituencies they represent are usually the beneficiaries of such experience. Moreso, senators that have stayed longer in the Senate have displayed a rare capacity to attract more projects to their constituents as well as the privilege of rank, in canvassing their positions or lending their voice to National Debates.

James Manager, for instance, was able to achieve the The Nigerian Maritime University, Okerenkoko, Delta State through the bill he sponsored in the Senate. Beyond the quality and appropriateness of the bill, it was his experience, lobbying and politicking, gathered from serving 3 terms in the Senate, that ensured the success of the bill.

Senator Gbenga Ashafa is also drawing from such experience to move forward his bill to see Yabatech upgraded to a university through the City University of Technology Bill sponsored by him.

Of course, I’m a stickler for merit and would not advocate that a non performing representative be returned to the national assembly just to halt the excessive turnover of legislators. However, those who have laurels to show and have fought the good fight should not be denied further opportunity.

On this I completely align with the position of the chairman of my party, the APC, comrade Adams Oshiomole who recently encouraged the party to reward Loyalty and Experience. He said “Let me assure all of us that the National Working Committee is making this promise publicly and we are doing you no favour. Legislation and the legislature requires experience because nobody can give what he does not have. We see people like Senator McCain, when they speak, the American people listen.

High turn over of legislators is not a value to be celebrated. What we should celebrate is experience which cannot be read in books, but can only be acquired on the job. I want to reassure you that we will do everything possible to change the old narrative of heavy turn over every four years and the ‘politics of you have done enough, step aside’ will change over time for the good of Nigeria and for the maintenance of democracy”.

Without a doubt, Senator Ashafa has remained loyal to the party and his constituents and I believe the experience he has gathered in nearly two terms in the Senate will prove a valuable asset in the coming years for his constituents and Nigerians. Senator Ashafa remains passionate and committed to delivering on every promise made to his constituents, to provide legislative support to the executive, to defend our dear constitution and to ensure that the common man finds hope in our dear country.

Thankfully, Senator Ashafa has again answered the clarion call from his constituents to continue to serve them at centre dutifully.

The Senate, further resolved to direct its relevant committees to invite the FRSC and NNPC to develop solutions to prevent such accidents, while also urging the Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing and State Governments to accelerate the development of trailer parks and installation of way bridges to manage the trailer movement on our roads.

This resolution was reached following a motion sponsored by the Senator representing Lagos East Senatorial District, Senator Gbenga Ashafa, who addressed his colleagues under Order 42 which provides for Matters of Urgent Public Importance.

In the Motion captioned “Need to enforce stricter driving regulations against petrol tankers, trailers and other articulated vehicles across Nigeria, Ashafa identified human error as the major cause of such accidents stating that “The Senate is further concerned that there seems to be a clear trail of preventable human error, lack of road worthiness as the prevalent causes of these life threatening accidents.”

Ashafa expressed displeasure over the fact that despite having moved a similar motion in 2015 when a series of fuel tanker fires occurred across Nigeria including the unfortunate tanker fire which occurred in the Upper Iweka area of Onitsha in Anambra State, claiming 70 lives, in 2015.

In his words, “The Senate is concerned that between 2015 and 2018, the same issues of fuel tanker infernos and accidents caused by articulated vehicles still bedevil our highways.”

On her part, the Senator representing Lagos Central, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, complained about the state of Nigerian roads while appealing to Government to create transit parks for trailer drivers. She stated that “Unfortunately the roads are appalling, we are all very familiar with the Lagos- Ibadan express way. I want to appeal to the Senate and Nigeria as a whole to create trailer parks.”.

While demanding accountability, Senator Buhari Abdulfatai said, “How can a petrol tanker carrying 33,000 litters of fuel experience break failure, who are those in charge to check these tankers? We need to put measures in place against trucks carrying dangerous products.” Also, Senator Gbolahan Dada, in his contribution suggested that Petroleum products be moved across the country via the use of pipelines.

In his remarks, Senate PresidentBukola Saraki stated that “This is a lesson that we need to learn from. Those agencies that are in charge of ensuring the safety of tanker movement across the country must ensure compliance to ensure that the tanker drivers have gotten adequate licenses and vehicles have received their adequate certificates showing that they are in good condition to ply our roads.”

“On my part as the Senator representing Lagos East Senatorial District, as far back as July in 2015, the very first motion I sponsored on the floor of the 8th National Assembly was on the issue of “Fuel Tanker tragedies on Nigeria’s highways”, which led the Senate to call on the Federal Government and NNPC to take all measures to prevent future occurrences.

“Such avoidable tragedies as the occurrence of yesterday are not acceptable. I therefore call on all the relevant agencies of Government particularly the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the government of Lagos State to investigate the incident with a view to ensuring that anyone found guilty of any act of Negligence is made to face the full force of the law.

“While we continue to work hard towards preventing a repeat occurrence, we all must also commit to assisting the Government by ensuring that we adhere to rules and regulations relating to the safety of our businesses and our neighbours, in order not to expose anybody to attendant dangers that may emanate from the discharge of our businesses.”
