FG Gives Contractor Two Weeks To Fix Iju-Agbado Rail Line

The Minister of Transportation, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, on Thursday, gave the contractor handling the Lagos-Ibadan rail project two weeks to complete the at Iju-Agbado axis.

He gave the ultimatum during the monthly inspection of the project. The minister noted that work was slow because of the scarcity of the equipment needed.

Amaechi said 30-passenger coaches and about 300 wagons would be used on the axis upon completion.

He said: “The problem the contractor has now is the civil work between Agbado and Iju, which is critical to me because I don’t think passengers should go and board train from Agbado.

“I believe that it is important that the closer we are to Lagos, the better for the rail. That is what we are battling now because I want them to use the same speed noticed in some sections in the construction of Agbado area to Iju.

“They want us to flag off from Agbado, but I don’t want because I feel Iju will be more appropriate to flag off and they said they will be ready with that axis in two weeks. But I think we should get to Iju because it will not be wise to drive from Lagos to Agbado to board train.”

On the unavailability of equipment, he said: “They argued that lack of equipment was responsible for the pace of work because the equipment are not on the shelf that can just be picked and paid for. What is causing the delay on the Agbado to Iju axis is equipment related.

“The equipment have to be brought from overseas. We will have to wait for the processing and then ship it down and if we wait for those equipment, we might be finishing the job when the equipment would arrive.”

On the arrival of coaches, Amaechi said: “We are expecting 30-passenger coaches mixed with locomotive wagons, 300 wagons and two sets of Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) made up of 10 coaches each and two motorcars, which will arrive in Lagos before the construction work is completed.”

Senator Ashafa Protects Buhari, Amaechi At Senate Committee Meeting On Stalled Eastern Rail Line

The Chairman of the Joint Committee of the Senate on Land Transport and Local and Foreign debts, Senator Gbenga Ashafa, on Tuesday, protected the Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi, from the fiery questions of Senator Shehu Sanni, which Ashafa described as being unrelated to the reason the Minister was summoned.

Recall that Amaechi had been summoned by the Senate following a motion of urgent national importance moved by the Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu on the fate of the Eastern Railway Development involving Port Harcourt, Enugu, Makurdi, Yola, Delta and Maiduguri, after it was reported that General Electric had pulled out of a concession agreement with the Federal Government of Nigeria and therefore abandoned the rail project.

The Hon. Minister wasted no time in allaying the fears of Nigerians saying that it wasn’t a case of the concessionaire pulling out of the concession agreement but rather the fact that due to some internal restructuring at General Electric, the company had withdrawn totally from the business of transportation.

Amaechi, also noted that General Electric had handed over their interest in the Nigerian Narrow Gauge Rail Network to “Transnet”, a company who had been a party the concessioning negotiations from inception.

Chairman of the Joint Committee, Senator Ashafa, had during his opening remarks set the tone for the meeting stating that “this meeting is not an investigative hearing. Rather it is an interactive session to enable the Honourable Minister brief the representatives of the Nigerian people, through the two committees directly concerned with the issue at hand.”

He added that “as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Land Transport, I am well aware of President Muhamadu Buhari’s commitment towards ensuring that every geo-political zone benefits from the presence of the Standard Gauge rail being constructed in the country.”

Tempers however rose when Senator Obinna Ogba accused the minister of deriding the Igbo people and asked that the Minister withdraw his comments. Subsequently, the co-chairman of the seating, Senator Sanni accused the Minister of being selective and partisan in the process of granting academic scholarships to Nigerian Students to study in China.

This again drew Ashafa’s intervention by stating that the question asked by Senator Sanni was not within the purview of the summons extended to the Minister and reiterated that he was at liberty not to answer them.

Amaechi, in his response, stated that that the said scholarships had nothing to do with his ministry and as such couldn’t have been interfered with by him. He stressed that the said scholarships were granted by a Chinese company and so reserved the right to determine their criteria with which to select beneficiaries of same.

Senate Summons Amaechi Over Eastern Rail Line

The Nigerian Senate, on Wednesday, summoned the Minister of Transport, Mr Rotimi Amaechi, to brief it Committees on Land Transport and Local and Foreign Debt to give details of Federal government plan for railway development in the Eastern axis along the Port-Harcourt-Enugu-Maiduguri rail lines.

The resolution was taken at plenary following a point of order by the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu who raised concerns about the unequal spread of the rail-line project.

Senator Ekweremadu alleged that the south east may likely miss out of the project.

However the Senate Leader, Ahmed Lawan said the decision of the American company, GE to opt out of the rail line project would not jeopardize ongoing work at the eastern axis.

The Senate thereby resolved to summon the Transport Minister to appear before the relevant committees.

Rivers Govt Absolves Wike From APC Crisis…Accuses Amaechi Of Plotting To Impose Candidate

The Rivers State government has absolved Governor Nyesom Wike from the crisis rocking the state chapter of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Commissioner for Information and Communications in the state, Emma Okah, stressed that the Minister of Transportation, Chubuike Rotimi Amaechi, should rather be blamed for the unending imbroglio facing the Rivers APC.

Recall that Amaechi had accused Governor Wike of sponsoring APC member to cause confusion within the party.

But in a swift reaction, the Information Commissioner said the party’s current predicament emanated from the minister’s insistence that a “serving senator has no right to aspire to be governor of Rivers State and the unilateral appointment of his Lagos business partner as the preferred governorship candidate without regard to the right of other APC members to contest party primaries.”

Okah further advised Amaechi to drop his “dictatorship tendencies” and stop accusing Governor Wike of the disarray in the party.

Amaechi Cries Out, Says Wike Commissioning His Projects In Rivers

Former Rivers State Governor and Minister of Transportation, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Amaechi has said that some projects being commissioned by his successor, Nyesom Wike were projects already completed by him during his administration.

Amaechi stated this during a grand reception organized in his honor by the Chiefs and people of Ishimbam General Assembly (IGA) in conjunction with the Free Rivers Development Initiative (FRDI) at the Freedom Square, Elele in Ikwerre Local Government Area of the State.

He said Wike was taking credits for his administration’s achievements because   he (Amaechi) did not place priority in commissioning projects.

“Wike commissioned a project that I completed. He called the Speaker of the House of Representatives to commission a flyover I already completed … Tell him (Wike) that he should go ahead and keep commissioning, I have no problem with that. When I was Governor, I provided development for Ikwerre people just like I did for other tribes in the State,” he said.

Amaechi also criticised Governor Wike over his weak stewardship on infrastructure and human capital development in Ikwerre land since he became Governor in 2015 till date.

“Let Wike tell us what he has done in Ikwerre land. For me, if I have done nothing I have brought up one of your  sons right from INEC and RISONPALM. But aside the human capital development, you also know  that in Elele you have roads everywhere. I have given Elele Primary Schools, health centers and roads. My mother is from Egbeda, I’m sure Egbeda people will agree that I did the road from Egbeda to Omerelu.

“As Governor, I did a road from Omerelu to Apani, I did another road from Ubima to Omerelu. I hear you’ve had no electricity for nine months. I will talk to the minister of power to fix it. You people should get the evaluation and bring it to my office for verification and necessary action.

“Please you people should ask Governor Wike what he has done for you. Wike’s four years is gradually coming to an end. He has only from now till May, 2019. We’ll  compare him to my first four years,” Amaechi said.

The former Governor also said he started attracting projects to his Ikwerre people when he was Speaker of the State House of Assembly. He recalled that he was at the verge of transforming Elele into a city before he left office as governor in 2015.

“In Elele, you have network of roads all over which were awarded during my administration and I nearly transformed Elele into another city to such an end that anybody can live and go to work from Elele. Please beg your Governor to give you water. But for me, I have given Elele Health Centers, Roads, and also connected Elele to Omagwa.”

Amaechi also promised to revive the rice mill in Elele Alimini if the Ishimbam local farmers in the area could come together to form a cooperative to start the rice farm owned by the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC.

“The rice mill at Elele Alimini, ask NDDC, I brought it to that place. Go to NDDC and ask. But, if all farmers can come together and form a cooperative to start the rice farm I am ready to appeal to NDDC to come and hand over to you, so that you can have the rice farm,” Amaechi said.

East-West Road Now Free Of Pot Holes, Says Amaechi

The Minister of Transport, Mr Rotimi Amaechi has said has expressed satisfaction on the ongoing dualisation of the East-West road project which connects the Niger Delta region.

The Minister who accompanied his Niger Delta counterpart for the inspection of the section II Subsection II of the East-west road from Warri, Delta State to Port-Harcourt, Rivers state, said contrary to negative reports the road has been reconstructed and not abandoned.

“My initial knowledge on what our opponents are saying, is that we have abandoned the East-West road. We drove all the way from Warri without heating any bad road. So, in some areas, one lane has been completed, in some areas, the two lanes have been completed. So, it means that you can drive all the way from Warri and to Port Harcourt without having to issues.”

“If I didn’t come, i would have been among those that think that nothing is happening in the Niger Delta. That’s why I told all the transportation Correspondents to come and see things as they are. If it is bad, they should report it that it is bad. But, I am sure you will not report that it is bad because we drove all the way from Benin to Port-Harcourt and there was no pot hole,” he said.

FAAN Absolves Amaechi’s Wife Of Assault On Airport Officials

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has debunked the allegation that wife of the Minister of Transportation, Mrs Judith Amaechi, supervised the assault and manhandling of some airport officials on May 26.

The General Manager, Corporate Affairs of FAAN, Mrs Henrietta Yakubu, made the denial on Friday in Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that some online media had claimed that Amaechi and her aides assaulted the officials at the Port Harcourt International Airport.

They had alleged that the officials were assaulted because they refused her from boarding an Air Peace flight from Port Harcourt to Abuja.

However, Yakubu said: “The authority will like to state emphatically that the incident has nothing to do with the minister’s wife.

“It was between some security personnel at the airport and the airline officials.’’

Also, Mr Chris Iwarah, General Manager, Corporate Communications, Air Peace, told NAN that the airline was still investigating the alleged incident.

“We are still investigating the incident but as an airline, it is not in our character to join issues with our customers who are part of the Air Peace family,’’ he said.
