Suspected Ritualist Arrested In Ondo

A serial suspected ritualist and kidnapper, who usually disguised as a mad man in Akure, the Ondo state capital city, was on Monday, arrested by neighborhood vigilante group at Orita-Obele Estate, near roadblock in Akure, with two handsets in his pocket.

The middle-age suspected ritualist who claimed to have traveled from Edo state to Akure confessed to have been in the business of kidnapping in Ondo state for sometimes while pretending to be a mentally deranged person.

An eyewitness, Mr Ganiyu Yusuf, said that some charms and ritual substances were also found in the man’s pocket, adding that timely intervention of policemen rescued the suspect from being set ablaze by angry residents.

Confirming the arrest of the lunatic, the State Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr Femi Joseph said the man was accused to have chewed and swallowed the SIM card of his phone when he was apprehended.

The PPRO noted that the man was still in the police custody for further investigations.

Ondo Court Sentences 7 To Death

An Ondo state High Court sitting in Akure. has sentenced seven young men to death by hanging and life imprisonment  for killing an American based man, Banji Adafin.

In one of their operations, the armed robbers that invaded the No. 5 Temidire street, Muyiwa Oni Avenue along Akure\Owo expressway residence of One Banji Adafin who recently travelled back from the overseas trip had killed him in cold blood in the presence of his wife and then carted away their properties.

The Seven convicted persons: Jimoh Sodiq a.k.a Akamo, Blessing Ogunlade, Yomi Balogun a.k.a Regal, Oluwaseun Oluwalola a.k.a Iyan, Akeem Adedayo, Oso John Omoniyi a.k.a Bosco and Sodiq Babatunde were found guilty of armed robbery, conspiracy to commit murder and for illegal possession of firearms.

Delivering the judgement that lasted four hours, the trial judge, Justice Samuel Bola  held that the prosecuting counsel and officials of the Department of state services, DSS had proved beyond reasonable doubt that the seven young men robbed and used gun to kill the U.S deceased Banji Adafin at his home on Owo expressway in Akure on 4th of July last year when he came to Nigeria for a vacation.

Justice Bola said the offenders committed the offences in contrary to the robbery and Firearms Act, laws of the Federation (2004) and the Criminal Code, laws of Ondo state (2006).

The Court also sentenced to one-year imprisonment, the eighth offender, Damilola Samuel a.k.a Mama who was the girlfriend of one of the convicts for allegedly aiding and keeping incriminating materials.

Reacting, counsels to the convicted persons, Abdulrahman Yusuf and Samuel Aiyesa, said the Judgement would be challenged at the Court of Appeal after thorough reviewing.

Also speaking, the government’s lawyer, Grace Olowoporokun who represented the state Attorney General, Mr Adekola Olawoye commended the verdict as a justice for the murdered U.S. based man.

Damilola was said to have aided in removing the plasma television, laptops and other incriminating materials suspecting to be stolen goods from the residence of the Blessing Ogunlade.

According to the charge sheet, the armed robbers that invaded the No. 5 Temidire street, Muyiwa Oni Avenue along Akure\Owo expressway residence of One Banji Adafin who recently travelled back from an overseas trip had killed him in cold blood in the presence of his wife and then carted away their properties.

The wife of the deceased, Abimbola Adafin while recounting her experience before the court during the trial, narrated how the armed robbers invaded their residence in a shaky voice to the court in vivid details.

According to her, she was inside their bedroom along with their husband and daughter when she heard other occupant living together with their family; one Hannah Temitope (a relative) and Deborah Petti (a housemaid) suddenly scream at the top of their lungs which made her rush out of her bedroom to the living room.

She testified that when she got to the sitting room, she saw why the two women screamed; they were held at gunpoint by two armed robbers.

She said that when she saw the armed robbers, she panicked and ran back to her room and stated that unknown to her, the armed robbers had gained access inside the house through the kitchen and the house girl had explained later that she was washing plates inside the kitchen when she saw “a black, short gunman” dressed in a jean and a vintage shirt standing behind her.

She told the court that though the house girl screamed for help, she was threatened to keep quiet or else she would be shot and was ordered to lie down along with the Family’s relative while some among the armed robbers beat the women with an iron rod.

She testified further that the armed robbers took away the following
items from their home; 2 Samsung Plasma Television sets, her husband’s Samsung phone, one techno phone and electric pressing iron.

According to the prosecutor, DSS official, Olajiri Fadipe, while six of them were actively involved in the armed robbery, the seventh accused person had supplied the firearms while having no registered license to do such and the female among them, Damilola Samuel a.k.a Mama was alleged to have aided in removing the plasma television, laptops and other incriminating materials suspecting to be stolen goods from the residence of the 2nd defendant, Blessing Ogunlade.

In her statement, Damilola Samuel had confessed that she was in a relationship with the second defendant which had made her do his bidding when he asked her to remove some incriminating items from his home.

Delivering the judgement, Justice Bola said the punishments would run concurrently.

Ondo Holds LG Polls Dec. 1

The Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC) has fixed December 1, 2018 for councillorship and local government elections in the state.

The commission also released guidelines for the polls which it said would be conducted in all the 18 local

Chairman of the commission, Mr. Yomi Dinakin, announced the date and issued the guidelines at a stakeholders meeting held in Akure, the state capital, on Thursday.

Dinakin, however, ruled out the use of card reader machines during the conduct of the elections.

He said the law setting up the commission has no provision for the use of the machines for the conduct of its elections.

Apart from the legal barrier, the ODIEC boss said Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) didn’t release its card reader machines for the use of state electoral bodies.

Troops Conduct Clearance Operation In Ondo

Troops of the 32 Artillery Brigade of the Nigerian Army from Owena Barracks, Akure, have conducted a five-day clearance operation at various flash points and forest in Akoko area of Ondo State.

Some of the raided areas include Ajowa, Akunnu, Ise, Auga, Isua and Ikakumo-Akoko forests.

Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, Major Ojo Adenegan said camps of suspected kidnappers were destroyed and some arrested during the operations.

He said the suspects, who confessed to several kidnappings, have been handed over to appropriate security agencies for further investigations.

More than ten kidnappings had been recorded in Akoko area to Owo/Idoani axis of Ondo state in the last seven months.

Court Remands Three In Custody Over Alleged Murder In Ondo

A Chief Magistrate’s Court sitting in Akure, the Ondo State capital, have remanded three persons for alleged murder of one Muyiwa Adelogba.

The three accused – Adegboyega Adeola 26; Oniyere Bisi 46; and Oniyere Ojo, 18– were alleged to have committed the offence at the Community Health Center in Ifira-Akoko, in the Akoko South-West Local Government Area.

They were arraigned before the court on two counts bordering on murder.

It was gathered that the accused allegedly caused the death of Adelogba as they allegedly hit him with planks and irons which led to his death.

The charges read in part, “That you,  Adegboyega Adeola 26; Oniyere Bisi 46; and Oniyere Ojo, 18, and one other at large, on June  19, 2018, at about 5.30pm at  Community Health Center, Ifira-Akoko, caused the death of Muyiwa Adelogba by hitting him with planks and irons.”

The offence was said to be contrary to Section 316 and punishable under sections 324,319(1) of the Criminal Code, Cap 37, Volume 1, Law of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.

The accused said they were not guilty of the offence when the charges were read to them, but their pleas were not taken by the court.

The police prosecutor, Sergeant Meshach Emmanuel, prayed the court to remand the accused in the Olokuta Prison to enable the court to send the duplicates of the case file to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions for legal advice.

He also prayed the court to adjourn the case pending the outcome of the legal advice from the DPP.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Victoria Bob-Manuel, ordered the remand of the accused in the Olokuta Prison pending the release of the legal advice by the DPP.

Ondo Govt Directs LG Chairmen To Set Up NYSC Governing Board

The Ondo State Government, on Tuesday, directed Local Government chairmen in the state to set up the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) governing boards in the interest of the youth.

The Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, Mr Saka Yusuf-Ogunleye,  gave this directive in Oke-Agbe Akoko, headquarters of Akoko North West.

Yusuf-Ogunleye, doubles as the Chairman, Governing Board, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in the state.

He said the setting up of the board in the councils had become a necessity at this time in order to be abreast of the happenings on the affairs of corps members regularly.

“These young ones are here on national assignment just as ours are performing the same task in other parts of the country.

As they are here, their security, shelter and well being have become our responsibility and we must take this very seriously.

The way we treat them will go a long way to show our level of respect for humanity.

“The board will consist of the LG Chairman, Divisional Police Officer (DPO), DSS and councillor for youth affairs among others, whose offices are youth-related,” he said.

The commissioner added that he was in Akoko to show the youth how they could benefit from the various programmes being implemented by the Akeredolu-led administration.

Ondo Police Command Parade Alleged Cultists

The Ondo State Police Command has paraded ten suspects including two teenagers who are students of Oroke High School, Akungba Akoko for their alleged involvement in cultism.

Parading the suspects before newsmen at the Police Headquarters in Akure, the State Commissioner of Police, Mr Gbenga Adeyanju said the two teenagers Sodiq Jimoh 17 and Wasiu Raji 14year old, were said to be part of cultists terrorising Akungba Community and its environs.

Mr Adeyanju said three other suspected cultists Peter Yoyiho, Jimoh Taiwo and Daramola Temitope who confessed to members of Aye Confraternity were equally arrested in Akungba Akoko.

110,000 Pupils To Benefit From FG’s School Feeding Program In Ondo

The Ondo State Government says over 110,000 pupils will benefit from the Home Grown School Feeding Programme which took off on Monday.

Special Adviser to Governor  Oluwarotimi Akeredolu on Multilateral and Inter Governmental Affairs, Mrs Olubunmi Ademosun said this on Tuesday in Akure.

She revealed that 1,500 cooks had been mobilised across the 18 local government areas of the state for the programme.

“Environmentalists have also been trained and mobilised to ensure that the food are prepared in hygienic way.

“110,000 Primary 1-3 pupils across the three senatorial districts of the state will enjoy the free daily feeding.

“I must commend President Buhari for this initiative that will not only alleviate the burden of parents, but also increase the nutritional status of children.

“We pledge one hundred percent support for the success of this programme,” the governor’s aide said.

Police Confirm Clash Between Yoruba, Hausa In Ondo

The Ondo State Police Command has said it has begun investigation into a fight involving some followers of a masquerader and some members of the Hausa community at Old Garage area of Akure , the state Capital.

Eyewitness reports that the crisis started after some followers of the Akure masquerader disturbed the activities of the Hausa, who were selling at the Old Garage area.

The Hausa traders resisted which led to a clash that left many injured.

Some motorcycles were reportedly burnt, while some houses were torched.

Mr. Femi Joseph, state Police Public Relations Officer, said, “We learnt that some people who were following a masquerader had issues with some members of the Hausa community. But immediately we drafted our men there, normalcy was returned. We are still looking for the people that caused the crisis. If we arrest them, we will charge them to court.”

In related development, Chief Press Secretary to the Deji of Akure, Oba Aladelusi Aladetoyinbo, Mr. Michael Adeyeye, said the palace was also investigating the matter.

Supreme Court Dismisses Akeredolu’s Appeal Against Olusegun Abraham

The Supreme Court has dismissed an appeal filed by Ondo State Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu for lack of merit.
Akeredolu had, by the appeal, challenged a July 2017 judgment of the Court of Appeal, Abuja, which upheld an order by a Federal High Court in Abuja, granting permission to Olusegun Abraham to serve Akeredolu through substituted means, court documents in relation to the suit he (Abraham) filed.
Abraham’s suit is challenging the outcome of the primary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), which produced Akeredolu as the party’s candidate for the last governorship election in Ondo State.
In a unanimous judgment on Friday morning, a five-man panel of the Supreme Court held that Akeredolu’s appeal was without merit.
Justice John Okoro, in the lead judgment, but read by Justice Ejembi Eko, upheld the earlier decision of the Court of Appeal and awarded N500,000 cost against Akeredolu, in favour of Abraham.

Ondo Police Command Recover Six Stolen Cars, Arrest Notorious Cultists

The Police in Ondo state have recovered six vehicles stolen at different locations in the state by one Gbenga Fabode.

The suspect is one of the nine suspected criminals paraded by the state commissioner of Police, Gbenga Adeyanju in Akure, the state capital.

The suspect who had repainted some of the cars hails from Ogun state.

The Police boss also paraded two notorious cultists who allegedly killed a member of the cult group in Owo area of the state.

Adeyanju who noted that the suspects would be charged to court, warned criminals to steer clear of the state.

Ondo NSCDC Parades Dealers Of Fake Currencies

The Ondo State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps have arrested two suspects, Chika Nwakwo, and Chukwujekwe Udoh, who specialized in issuing fake currency to unsuspecting members of the public.

The two were nabbed with the sum of Two Hundred and Seventy Eight Thousand Naira, N278. 000.00. The men carried fake One Thousand Naria (N1000.00) notes, police said.

The Suspects confessed that they bought the fake currency at the sum of One Hundred and Thirty Thousand Naira, N130. 000.00, somewhere in Lagos state.

Mr. Kayode Balogun, the Commands Spokesperson, revealed that the suspects were arrested after a tip-off from members of the public at Oja Oba in Owo, the Owo local government area of Ondo state.
