Labour Unions Urges President Buhari To Sign Minimum Wage Bill Into Law

The organized labour in Nasarawa State has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to expedite action and sign into law the National Minimum Wage Bill without further delay.

Chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Abdullahi Adeka and his counterpart in the Trade Union Congress in the state Comrade Danladi Namo made the call in Lafia while speaking with Radio Nigeria on the their expectations on the passage of The National Minimum Wage Bill by the senate recently.

The labour leaders said that urgent implementation of the Minimum wage was the best thing the federal government can do to reciprocate the patience and sacrifices of Nigerian workers.

They Commended the National Assembly for approving the new minimum wage bill describing it as labour friendly steps in the right direction.

Comrade Adeka and Comrade Namo also called on state governors to do the needful and comply with the implementation of N30,000 minimum wage to avoid industrial disharmony.

Judiciary Staff Stage Peaceful Protest

Members of Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria, Nasarawa State have staged a peaceful protest over issues bordering on their welfare.

During the protest at the State High Court in Lafia, National President of JUSUN Comrade Marwan Mustapha said members of the Association across the Federation were in the state to persuade the Nasarawa state government to address their demands which have lingered on since 2016.

Comrade Marwan Mustapha represented by National Assistant Secretary of the union, Mr Saidu Adamu explained that the protest would continue until the state government takes proactive measures to resolve the impasse.

Nasarawa State Chairman of JUSUN, Comrade Jimoh Musa enumerated some of their demands which include illegal deduction from their salaries, non payment of promotion careers, non conversion of qualified staff to higher cadre among others.

Comrade Jimoh Musa said most of the members are facing difficult times as management of the state high court have stopped the payment of their salaries for embarking on strike.

The protesting Judiciary Workers blocked the main gates of the state high court with the state Chief Judge Suleiman Dikko locked inside his office as all efforts to reach him for comments was unsuccessful.

JUSUN members from Ondo, Edo, Katsina and Rivers among other states are among the protesters.

President Buhari Mourns Emir Of Lafia

President Muhammadu Buhari has received with profound sadness news of the passing of the Emir of Lafia, Alhaji Isah Mustapha Agwai I.

On behalf of the Federal Government, the President extends heartfelt commiserations to Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, the Lafia Emirate Council, the people of Lafia and Nasarawa State on the passage of the highly respected monarch who ascended the throne of his ancestors in 1974.

The President assures them of the fullest sympathy of the Federal Government as they mourn the chairman of the Nasarawa State Council of Emirs and Chiefs and state chairman of Jama’tul Nasril Islam (JNI), who will be fondly remembered for his exemplary leadership and tireless efforts at improving the lives of his people.

In the course of his remarkable 44 years on the throne, President Buhari affirms that Alhaji Agwai’s devoted himself to championing inter-religious harmony, tolerance, peacebuilding and conflict prevention as well as promoting the role of education in nation building.

As the remains of the late Emir is buried on Friday, the President prays Allah to receive the monarch’s soul and grant him peaceful repose.

He also prays that Allah will grant the people of Lafia a worthy successor.

Gov Al-Makura Approves Dismissal Of NASPOLY Rector, Registrar, Bursar

Governor Umaru Al-Makura of Nasarawa State has approved the dismissal of Dr Silas Gyar, Rector of Nasarawa State Polytechnic Lafia.

According to a statement signed by Mohammed Bako, Chairman Governing Council of the Polytechnic on Friday in Lafia, the governor’s decision is in line with the government white paper report on the investigative committee into the activities of the institution.

The statement added that the dismissal takes effect from November 28.

It added that the governing council had also approved the dismissal of Labani Joseph-Dio, and Ahdullahi Akyo, Registrar and Bursar respectively.

Gov. Al-Makura therefore directed all the dismissed staff to refund the over N2 billion mismanaged by them while in office immediately.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that the dismissed staff were sent on compulsory leave Oct. 26, 2017 to pave way for investigation into their activities.

Group Endorses Maku For Nasarawa Governor

A Socio-Cultural Group, Eggon Cultural and Development Association in Nasarawa state has endorsed the governorship ambition of Former Minister of Information Mr Labaran Maku.

Nasarawa South Zonal Chairman of the Association Mr Ali Mada stated this at a meeting in Lafia.

Mr Ali Mada said their decision to endorse Mr Labaran Maku to contest for the governorship of Nasarawa state followed his rich records of achievement, sincerity, dedication and selfless service which have made him stand out among the other aspirants.

According to him, though the association is not a political group, their decision was borne out of the dire need of a purposeful leadership that will explore diverse ways towards economic empowerment of the state.

National President, Eggon Youth Movement Mr Daniel Yaro described Mr Labaran Maku as the new hope for Nasarawa state in view of his experience in governance.

He called on the people of the state to vote out leaders whose preoccupation is to foment trouble among the diverse ethnic groups in the state for their selfish interests.

The Former Minister of Information Mr Labaran Maku expressed gratitude to the group for their endorsement, calling on youths to take their destiny in their by participating actively in the electoral process devoid of thuggery and violence.

Mr Labaran Maku promised to entrench accountability and transparency in governance if elected governor of Nasarawa state in the twenty nineteen elections.

The Former Minister of Information Mr Labaran Maku is contesting for the governorship of Nasarawa state on the platform of All Progressives Grand Alliance APGA.

2019: Nasarawa PDP Women Endorse Ex Minister As Gubernatorial Candidate

Women in the People’s Democratic Party, PDP in Nasarawa state have endorsed a former Minister of Information, Mrs Patricia Akwashiki as the gubernatorial candidate.

The state women leader, Mrs Stella Ogboshi, at a meeting of the women on Tuesday in Lafia, called on political parties to support women to be involved in ‘leadership’ politics.

She said women have not been allowed to exploit their potentials in politics due to stiff conditions that relegates them to the background.

Mrs Patricia Akwashiki, at the meeting, said security, women and youth empowerment would be her priority if elected governor of Nasarawa State.

Wadada Declares Interest To Contest Nasarawa Governorship Election

Former member of the House of Representatives representing Keffi, Kokona, Karu federal constituency (2003 – 2011), and the Sarki Yakin Keffi, Hon Aliyu Ahmed Wadada, has announced his intention to run for the office of the Governor of Nasarawa State under the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Wadada made his intention known last Saturday at the party’s secretariat in Lafia, before proceeding to the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) press center along Makurdi Road, to officially unveil his manifesto to the media which was hosted bythe State Chairman, Comrade Dogo Shammah.

This act in itself put to rest the rumors of Hon. Wadada defecting from APC to APGA and that he intends to run for the Nasarawa west Senatorial seat under the said party.

Growing up, I must have been unconsciously guided by this maxim of political leadership due to my consistent tendency to serve the people. This has been a feature from my younger days at Keffi students union, to the creation of the association for better Keffi and subsequently, the creation of the association of the under 40’s when I became a House of Representatives member in 2003.

It is pertinent to note that I was a founder or founding member of all the above associations, particularly the association of the under 40’s that has produced three speakers of the House of Representatives: Dimeji Bankole, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, and the present Yaubu Dogara.

It is in the light of the above that I Aliyu Wadada Ahmed declare my intention to run for the office of the governor of Nasarawa state in 2019. “In God we trust”.

We shall join hands with the people of Nasarawa to make our dearly beloved state a befitting one where there would be the dignity of life. I bring to the good people of Nasarawa state a credible, dynamic, and contemporary opportunity to improve our commonwealth as a state.

Nasarawa state is tremendously blessed not only with very good people but also vast arable land which include salt and limestone in Awe; coal in Obi; Marble in Ugya, and lastly petroleum in Keana Local Government.

Our state is bounded by the FCT, Kaduna, Plateau, Benue and Taraba States. The potentials of the state and it’s population of three million people are yet to be fully harnessed.

Our government will be innovation-driven based on contemporary public service approach. Our commitments as outlined in our manifesto are hinged on the following:

Plug revenue leakages, ensure fiscal sustainability, implement systems and processes for efficient and responsible public service e.g recurrent vs overhead costs, transparency and accountability in the civil service (Establishment of Procurement Agency).

  1. Sustainable Human Capital Development

Rehabilitate the health, Education and Social welfare infrastructure across the state. e.g improve hospitals and schools, ensure inclusiveness and timely benefits retirees etc.

  1. Security, Law and Social Order

Institutional Support for law enforcement, support community policing, secure farmers and herders and implement systems and processes to ensure social decorum.

  1. Reformation of Land Administration and Related investments

Develop and attract investments in the mineral resources sector, implement agriculture and industry clusters in each senatorial zone for efficiency and sustainability of the agricultural value chain. Reform land and make the state sustainable regarding food(open up the Abuja corridors of the state).

  1. Infrastructure for Economic Growth and Prosperity.

Implement realistic, Sustainable infrastructure development such as Roads, Water and Electricity. Attract investments using the P3 model and create economic zones for our youths to be gainfully employed.

Nasarawa Gov Reshuffles Cabinet, Drops 9 Commissioners, 2 Aides

Gov. Tanko Al-Makura of Nasarawa State has announced a major cabinet shakeup in which nine Commissioners and two Special Advisers lost their jobs.

This is contained in a statement signed by Alhaji Mohammed Abdullahi, the Secretary to the State Government, and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Lafia.

Abdullahi said the cabinet reshuffle took immediate effect.

The statement listed the affected commissioners as Abdulhamid Kwarra of Ministry of Environment and Solid Minerals; Gabriel Aka’Ka, Ministry of Water Resources and Rural Development, and Mary Enwongulu of Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development.

Also affected were Bamaiyi Anagba, Ministry of Youth and Sports Development; Dr Daniel Iya, Health; Yusuf Shehu Usman of Information, Culture and Tourism, as well as Sonny Agassi of Lands and Physical Planning.

Others include Mr Mohammed Yahaya of Ministry of Works, Housing and Transport; and Tanko Zubair of Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Cooperatives.

The statement also said that six commissioners were retained.

It added that Mr Jamil Zakari of Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources was redeployed to the Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism.

The Special Advisers to the governor affected by the exercise were Hajarat Ibrahim Danyaro on Gender Relations, Rehabilitation and Disabilities; and Ado Dauda Mohammed on Community Based Relations/Conflict Resolution and Management.

The statement further revealed that the erstwhile Special Adviser to the governor on Security, retired Lt.-Gen. Mohammed Adeka, would henceforth handle Community Based Relations/Conflict Resolution and Management.

“Meanwhile, Governor Umaru Al-Makura, on behalf of all the people of Nasarawa State profoundly thank the outgoing commissioners and special advisers for their services and wishes them success in their future endeavours,” the government said.

Nasarawa Police Command Arrest 29 Over Cult Clashes

No fewer than 29 people have been arrested over the killing of a man at Masaka in the Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.

The dead man, whose name was given simply as Ibrahim, was said to have met his fate on June 15 during a cult clash.

The Spokesman of the Nasarawa State Police Command, ASP. Samaila Usman, confirmed the development in an interview with a NAN correspondent on Sunday in Lafia.

Usman explained that two young men were earlier brought to the Masaka Police Station at about 11:30 p.m. on June 13 with various degrees of injuries.

He said that investigations revealed that the injuries were sustained during a cult clash at Angwan Jaba community in Masaka.

Usman said that on June 15, the command received information that rival cults had mobilised again for reprisal attack at Angwan Tiv village in Masaka during which Ibrahim was killed.

“A combined team of police officers were immediately dispatched to the area to bring the situation under control.

“But our men met stiff resistance from the cult members, numbering about 50.

“We were, however, able to disperse them while five of them were arrested at the scene and 24 others arrested later at different locations in the area.”

Usman said that one Hassan later reported at the Masaka Police Station that his cousin, named Ibrahim was macheted to death at Angwan Tiv.

“So, the police immediately mobilised to the place and collected the corpse but the parents refused us taking the corpse to the mortuary.”

The spokesman pleaded with members of the public to assist the police with useful information that would help to check the menace of cultism and other criminal activities in the Masaka area.

“There are concentrations of organised cult groups in Angwa Tiv and Angwa Jaba in Karu but we are on top of the situation.

“That is why we have launched ‘Operation Fish Out’ and created anti-cultism units to fight cultism in Nasarawa State.”

Smokers Are Prone To Tuberculosis, Says Expert

The Nasarawa State Programme Coordinator for Tuberculosis (TB) and Leprosy, Dr Danjuma Aboki, has urged Nigerians to desist from smoking and other habits that will make them vulnerable to contracting tuberculoses .

Aboki, who disclosed this in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Lafia, decried the alarming rate of TB patients in the state.

He said based on the reports from their coordinators in the 13 local government areas about 2, 400 persons were diagnosed with TB in the state.

According to him, the centres are increasing in the state unlike in the past to tackle complaints from patients in order to enable them access treatment nearest to their communities.

“As at 2003, there was only one TB treatment centre in the state located in Alushi, but the centres were now increased to 92 due to challenges being faced by patients.

“In addition to these centres, we also have 49 laboratory services in the state,” he said.

He, therefore, appealed to public to visit the TB centres for testing in order to detect any symptom early so as to address it.

Police Deploys 4,000 Officers To Nasarawa State Ahead Of President Buhari’s Visit

The Police Command in Nasarawa State says it has deployed over 4,000 officers and men to ensure a hitch-free visit of President Muhammadu Buhari to the state on Tuesday, Feb. 6.

The Commissioner of Police, Mr Bello Ahmed, told newsmen on Monday in Lafia that the command had put up a robust security arrangement with sister agencies to ensure a successful visit of the President to the state.

He said about 3,000 officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and other security agencies would be working in synergy with the police.

Ahmed said that security personnel would be positioned in strategic locations, adding that there would be road diversions along the route where the President would inaugurate some projects.

“I appeal to members of the public to be law abiding as they come out massively to welcome the president to the state.

“I also urge you to cooperate with the security agencies as they discharge their duties,’’ Ahmed said.

President Buhari, is during the visit, expected to inaugurate some projects embarked upon by the State Government which include; the Comprehensive Special School for the Physically Challenged in Lafia and headquarters of the State Fire Service, also in Lafia.

Other projects billed for inauguration are: Comprehensive Primary Healthcare Centre in Kwandere near Lafia, Muhammadu Buhari International Market, Karu, and the flag-off of construction of cargo airport in Lafia.

President Buhari Flags Off Community Health Services In Lafia

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari is scheduled to flag off the Community Health Influencers, Promoters and Services (CHIPS) programme on Tuesday the 6th of February, 2018 in Lafia, Nasarawa State.

CHIPS is one of the Administration’s initiative and a critical component of the Primary Health Care Revitalization program, particularly in addressing challenges of health’s human resources in the rural areas.

The official flag off of the CHIPS Programme is a major part of activities lined up for an official working day visit of the President to Nasarawa State.
