Gov Ambode Directs Increase Of Mobile Courts

Lagos State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode has directed the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice to increase the number of Mobile Courts to twenty to fast-track the prosecution of traffic offenders.

Governor Ambode who gave the directive when he paid a condolence visit to the Management and staff of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, at Oshodi over the death of an officer who was killed by a Policeman at Iyana Ipaja area of the State ordered that those who violate traffic rules and regulations should be tried at the point of offence without an option of fine.

Last week, the late LASTMA Officer, Mr Rotimi Adeyemo was reportedly killed by a Police officer attached to the Special Anti Robbery Squad, SARS who was stopped for contravening traffic rules.

Briefing newsmen after a meeting held behind closed doors with the LASTMA leadership and the heads of other traffic and security agencies in the State, Governor Ambode who described the incident as one too many revealed that between January and December, this year, eighteen LASTMA officials have been killed, while twenty-four others have been rendered handicapped during the discharge of their duties.

Assuring LASTMA and security agents of Government’s backing, Mr Ambode pointed out that the family of the late LASTMA official would be paid the ten million naira insurance policy bought for all serving security and allied agencies by the State Government.

“We have not been churning out this data just because we believe Lagosians will understand that these men and women that we put on the line of duty are harmless and they don’t have anything to protect them than just traffic laws which they are enforcing. This is a sober moment for us but again I need to encourage and further appeal to all our law enforcement officers, most especially LASTMA officers that this government is with them and we would do everything to protect their lives and also create an atmosphere to allow them to do their work properly,” Governor Ambode said.

2019: Sanwo-Olu Replies Agbaje, Says Lagos Not In Bondage

Lagos State All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu has refuted claims made by the the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Jimi Agbaje, that Lagosians are in bondage.

Sanwo-Olu stated this yesterday at the Palace of Akran of Badagry Aholu De Wheno Menu Toyi 1 during a consultative visit to the traditional rulers in the Badagry Division.

The APC guber candidate stressed that Lagosians are free citizens and not enslaved under the APC-led administration.

He said: “Some have started talking about freedom and insinuated that Lagos is in bondage. Unfortunately, we cannot begin to talk about freedom in the 21st century. This is insulting to humanity and the people of Lagos, especially because slavery and bondage were abolished in Badagry several decades ago. When they talk about freedom, we ask them freedom from what? We have had our freedom and everyone in Lagos is free. We have since moved away from the era of slavery, to era of prosperity with deep-seated aspiration for greater Lagos.

“We are aware of the challenges facing the people of Badagry on the rehabilitation of the expressway and we are promising that our administration would immediately hit the ground running and ensure the completion of that important road immediately we assume office by your votes.”

Sanwo-Olu reminded the royal fathers of the economic importance of tourism to the GDP of the state, maintaining that he would ensure a speedy completion of all projects that will improve the quality of lives of the people.

“It is no brainer that once we fix infrastructure, it will automatically jump-start development in the area.

How Governor Ambode Lost The Battle But Not The War In Lagos State, By Adebayo Samuel

Lagos state Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, lost the battle at the All Progressives Congress (APC) party primaries conducted few months back. Ambode was said to have fallen out of favor with some bigwigs in APC including the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) and the National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whom many believed is the reason Ambode is currently the Governor of the state.

According to several reports and publications, Ambode had stepped on so many toes of Lagos stakeholders. Report has it that he abandoned many projects initiated by his predecessor, Babatunde Fahola, and had also deviated from the state’s blueprint.

For example the Lagos compulsory monthly environmental sanitation to ensure a clean and safe state for her habitats was abandoned by Ambode. This was confirmed when Tinubu told journalists that Ambode had derailed from the Lagos state blueprint and master plan with no good reasons.

As the primary election drew near, it was obvious Ambode was going to lose the battle as he convened a world press conference where he made several allegations on how the security of the state is being compromised to ensure he loses out and also claimed the preferred candidates, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-olu, was not fit to govern the state as he had at a time been admitted at Gbagada Hospital in Lagos, and arrested abroad for allegedly spending fake dollar at a club.

These outburst and allegations reinforced the widespread speculations that Ambode had indeed accepted his fate. Results and pictures from the primaries revealed Ambode completely lose out to Sanwo-olu with a wide margin.

What amazed political observers was the way Ambode conceded defeat and congratulated his opponent Sanwo-olu. He aftermath of the defeat, promised to work with him to ensure his victory at the 2019 gubernatorial polls. This gesture, many believed had nestled the heart of the aggrieved party leaders and may as well retain Ambode in their good book for a possible consideration for future party engagement. To confirm his loyalty to the party and in total acceptance of his defeat, Ambode was seen side by side  Sanwo-olu at the APC National convention held in Abuja with smiles all around them.

The battle may have been lost by Ambode but he surely didn’t loose the war. As we approached the 2019 election we all hope the perceived love and unity between the Ambode’s and Sanwo-olu‘s camp yield a positive result and the state is retained as APC led state.

In a bid to ensure victory for President Muhamaadu Buhari in the 2019 general elections, about 5,000 volunteers have been formally inaugurated in Lagos by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to strengthen and increase the party’s followership base.

The 5,000 foot soldiers which were meant to cover only Lagos State, were mandated to champion the course of canvassing for votes to re-elect Presidential candidate of APC, Muhammadu Buhari in February next year.

Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola while addressing the gathering said that the move was borne out of the need to leverage on the large population of the State and to measure with the numbers of registered voters ahead of the 2019 polls.

“In the last general election, over 6 million people registered to vote in Lagos and only 2 million votes were recorded. And similar registered numbers have been recorded again. We are inaugurating the foot soldiers to canvass for support by the people so as to achieve the electioneering agenda of APC in 2019.

I want to urge our foot soldiers to go into the nooks and crannies of the state and inform prospective voters about the achievements of Our President in the last three and half years. Go into Clubs, on football pitch, in the bus, at work and on the street and narrate the promises made by Buhari’s administration and kept till date,” Minister said.

APC Lagos Women Restrategize For Increased Representation Of Women In Politics And Governance

Since the inception of democratic governance in Nigeria, it is apparent that the country still lags behind in the attainment of the 35% representation of women in appointments and elective positions as stipulated in Nigeria’s National Gender Policy.

Whilst we have witnessed an increase in women’s participation as voters, currently at over 50%, no woman has been elected as Senate President, Governor, Vice President or President in the history of Nigeria.

According to the Inter-Parliamentary Union, Nigeria ranks 183 out of 190 countries on percentage of female parliamentarians. We need to move up the ranks, and APC Lagos Women is looking to set the national pace, for others to follow.

Undoubtedly, Nigerian women continue to successfully play significant roles in family and business spheres, and it is our job to encourage, nurture and prioritise women participation in governance also.

In Lagos state, we recognise the significant economic and social contribution that women make to the ecosystem of our city. From markets to fishing communities, homes, hospitals, classrooms and even boardrooms, Lagos women continue to thrive and demonstrate unique skills and formidable resilience.

Even in governance, we have observed how the few women, who get in, continue to excel and do us proud. Over the years, the increase of women in governance and politics across the world has been observed to boost stability, socio-economic development and this in turn has amounted to the increasing call for female participation in diverse fields, especially in government and policy making.

For us in Lagos, we acknowledge that it is high time we made room for more women to participate in governance, and that we must open up the field to women from all social and economic levels, so that we can leverage on the strength and demonstrated skill which are unique to women.

The Lagos APC Women, understanding the underlying need to increase the participation of women in politics and governance, will seek to strengthen collaboration and dialogue with our party leaders, Lagos gubernatorial candidate, Mr. Babajide Sanwoolu and key stakeholders who have pledged their commitment to addressing this issue.

We understand the adept power women have in transforming downturns and the indisputable role they play in the society hence our effort towards harnessing same for the overall benefit of our nation.

However, we also understand the economic and social challenges that women often face in the society, and that we must address those, if we want to give the women folk a chance at claiming our place in politics and governance.

It is to this end that we will be working assiduously with women groups to design empowerment programs that take these challenges into consideration, and which are tailored to the needs of each participant. Our objective is to leave no one who is willing to participate, behind.

Our interest typically cuts across women in all sectors of the society who are ready and willing to lend their voice and abilities to drive progress, within and with the Government. We believe that Women should be highly, duly and actively involved in taking the lead.

Significant impact has been made under the aegis of the APC Lagos Women, with over a thousand included in the party and beneficiaries of several initiatives which are currently aimed at promoting full involvement in governance decisions.

It is only by working together, lifting and helping each other, that we women would secure our rightful position in politics and governance. The time has come for women to support, nurture and strengthen each other. As we band together, we will prove the strength in our numbers, to the benefit women, the interest of our men and children, and most of all, the betterment of the nation, particularly our dear Lagos State. The police said the deceased persons, who had involved in several cult clashes, were on the wanted list of the police for leading several cult fights in the Shomolu, Bariga, Fadeyi and Ojuelegba areas of the state.

CSP Oti said the deceased were trailed to the gathering by a rival cult group who invaded the arena and began to attack people.

The police spokesman said the fight was however brought to an end by the police who arrived quickly at the scene and made some arrests, noting that “unfortunately for the notorious cultists, Jpron and Solo, they died as a result of injuries sustained during the fight”.

The Lagos State Police Command said it arrested twenty-one persons in connection to the cult clash.

The statement reads: “Yesterday being 17/10/2018, at about 1715hrs, the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Pedro Police Station, received a call that two persons, later identified as Ibrahim a.k.a Small Jpron and one Solo, (surnames unknown), were killed at a political gathering organised by Hon. Ademorin Kuye at a place called Home Touch, situated at No. 228, Ikorodu Road by Obanikoro Way.

“The deceased persons, who had involved in several cult clashes, were on the wanted list of the police for leading several cult fights in the Shomolu, Bariga, Fadeyi and Ojuelegba areas of the state. They were trailed to the gathering by a rival cult group who invaded the arena and began to attack people. The fight was however brought to an end by the police who arrived quickly at the scene and made some arrests. Unfortunately for the notorious cultists, Ibrahim (a.k.a Jpron) and Solo, they died as a result of injuries sustained during the fight.

“Recall that the Command had on September 10, 2018, issued a press statement warning politicians not to gather in public places without notifying it to enable adequate provision of security and prevent hoodlums from hijacking such events. “He once again requests politicians to inform the police before gathering in public places. He notes that until the INEC gives the go-ahead, political campaign at this time is illegal and those in breach of the electoral law will be made to face the full wrath of the law,” the statement added.

Lagos East APC Leaders Disown Osinowo, Praise Ashafa

Stakeholders in Lagos East on Sunday were full of praises for the flag bearer of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Gbenga Ashafa.

They also distanced themselves from the fake victory of the member representing Kosofe Constituency 1 in the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon Bayo Osinowo.

The leaders who met in Epe lashed out at Osinowo for claiming victory in a primary that affirmed Ashafa as the party’s senatorial flag bearer.

They lambasted Osinowo for encouraging anarchy in the ruling party.

“The victory story of Osinowo is spurious, shocking and repulsive. It is a fabrication aimed at causing confusion in the party. It is also a figment of his imagination and that of his cohorts” the leaders said.

Meeting under the auspices of Lagos East Political Leaders Forum (LEPLF) to articulate the position of the senatorial district in the 2019 general election, the astonished leaders listed envy, selfish ambition and gluttonous appetite for power as reasons for Osinowo’s action.

“Senator Gbenga Ashafa did not call Osinowo. He never congratulated him” the leaders said.

They condemned the push by Osinowo and others to reverse the decision of APC faithful in the senatorial district.

In a statement entitled; Lagos East has spoken, the leaders lauded the role of the National Working Committee (NWC) in the fight for the ideals of democracy.

They commended APC members in Lagos State for affirming Gbenga Ashafa, Oluremi Tinubu and Olamilekan Solomon.

Signed by LEPLF Chairman, Alhaji Abdul-Aleem Mujeeb, the leaders advised Osinowo and his co-travelers to lend support to Ashafa in his effort to develop Lagos East.

Specifically, the leaders urged the Lagos State House of Assembly member and his associates to stop bringing the district into disrepute and ridicule.

“The last day for the conduct of party primaries is Sunday, 7th October, 2018. The submission of forms CF001 and CF002 for the Presidential and National Assembly elections is 10th-18th October, 2018. These documents have not been submitted to INEC. Osinowo’s name is not in any list. The NWC did not give Osinowo the nod to run for the seat” the leaders said.

Similarly, former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Prince Abiodun Ogunleye on Saturday reviewed the destruction in Ikorodu over the National Assembly primaries in Lagos East, describing the action of the lawmaker representing Kosofe Constituency 1 in the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon Bayo Osinowo and his associates as dangerous trend.

Ogunleye said it was the party’s duty to hold free and fair primaries but it has miserably failed to do so.

Addressing journalists in Ikorodu, Ogunleye stated that open secret voting remain a vital process for the development of democracy in Nigeria.

He described the APC primary in Ikorodu as a charade.

“It was supposed to be affirmation. The party disqualified Bayo Osinowo. The exercise was disrupted by thugs, electoral officers and government functionaries who disappeared with materials in Ikorodu” he said.

Ogunleye condemned Osinowo for not quitting the senatorial race after disqualification by the National Working Committee of the ruling party.

Equally , former Secretary to Lagos State Government, Chief Olorunfunmi Basorun has urged politicians to eschew violence and rigging.

He said Osinowo was disqualified from standing as a candidate by the appropriate authority.

“We expected a primary to affirm Ashafa’s candidature and our current House of Representatives candidate who has no opponent. The only person who opposed him stepped down. The National Working Committee cleared Senator Gbenga Ashafa. We got to the venue, I started smelling foul play. We got to the field, I saw my own chairman directing people to the other side. Unfortunately for them, the votes in Ward C2 exceeded the number of people accredited. This was replicated in all the wards in Ikorodu. They eloped with the materials and went on to write the results” he said.

Basorun, lawyer and former Central Bank of Nigeria director, described Osinowo as an ineligible candidate.

“They are doing nothing. The result is nothing. Bayo Osinowo cannot contest. Once a single candidate has been cleared by the appropriate authority, there is no opponent. Ashafa is our sole candidate for Lagos East senatorial district” he stated.

He said the fake votes cast in favour of the Lagos State House of Assembly member should be treated as thrown away.

“Osinowo has no respect for the party’ he said.

The former Lagos State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chairman who scolded some government officials for working against the interest of the party advised politicians to abide by the rules of the game.

He also urged the party to discipline Osinowo.

“The party must be strict on this particular matter. Some people cannot sit somewhere and think they are above the party. The party must discipline the man who asked people to vote for him in Lagos East senatorial district”

Meanwhile, the Director of Communication, Ashafa Campaign Organisation, Ayodele Adio is optimistic that Senator Gbenga Ashafa will be pronounced the rightful flag bearer of Lagos East Senatorial Constituency alongside Senator Remi Tinubu and Senator Olamilekan Solomon as the only candidates cleared for Lagos State Senatorial elections by the APC NWC.
“We urge all our supporters and the good people of Lagos East Senatorial Constituency to remain calm as we are sure the party’s decision remain supreme”.
