APC Receives Defectors In Edo

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has received more members of the opposition in Esan South East Local Government Area of Edo State.

The Chairman of the party in the state, Mr Anselm Ojezua, received the new members on Monday at the APC secretariat in Benin City, the state capital.

Ahead of the state house of assembly election scheduled to hold on March 9, he described the decision of the new members as timely.

Mr Ojezua added that the party has been working towards a decisive victory for its candidates in the coming polls.

He noted that the APC in Edo needed formidable representations at the House of Assembly, to support the strides being achieved by Governor Godwin Obaseki’s administration.

On the calibre of defectors coming into the party, the party chairman said, “Illushi is very important in Esan South East LGA because of its strong political base and agrarian nature.”

“I believe receiving leaders from that locality will make the March 9 elections easy for us.”

Osinbajo Launches School Feeding Programme In Edo

Vice President of Nigeria, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, has, launched the National Home-Grown School Feeding Programme, NHGSFP, in Edo State, to provide free meals for children in public schools in the state.

During the launch of the programme at Eyaen Primary School in Uhunmwode Local Government Area of the state, Osinbajo said the NHGSFP feeds 9.3 million children in 49,937 public primary schools in 27 states, including Edo State.

Earlier, Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, who received Prof. Osinbajo at Western Boys High School in Benin City, thanked the Vice President for the visit, and commended him for the Social Investment Programme, which had added value to the lives of Nigerians.

In Ikpobha-Okha LGA, the Vice President commissioned the first set of houses completed in Emotan Gardens where the keys of one of the houses was handed over to a primary school teacher who came out first in the state government training on modern teaching aids to primary school teachers.

Addressing a crowd at Open Field in Upper Sokponba Road, Osinbajo urged the people to vote President Muhammadu Buhari and all the candidates of the All Progressives Congress, APC in the election. Osinbajo noted that the school feeding programme   programme employs 94,422 cooks while over 100,000 small-holder farmers are linked to the programme. The Vice President said in feeding the children across the country, 594 cows are slaughtered, 138,000 chickens killed, and 83 million tonnes of fish used in preparing the meals.

Edo Governor Obaseki Assures Of Adequate Policing

Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has assured the state’s new Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Olusegun Odumosun, that the state security architecture will guarantee well-co-ordinated policing.

Obaseki gave the assurance during a courtesy visit by the state’s new Commissioner of Police to Government House in Benin City, the Edo State capital, yesterday.

The governor also gave the assurance that a permanent emergency response centre where activities of the new security architecture would be co-ordinated, would be ready before the end of the first quarter of 2019.He commended the outgoing CP, Mr. Johnson Kokumo, for his co-operation and support in birthing the security architecture. Odumosun said his mission in the state is to protect life and property and ensure the state is safe for all.

Court Jails 22 ‘Yahoo Yahoo’ Boys In Edo

The Benin Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) said it has secured conviction of 22 persons who were involved in yahoo yahoo within it’s operational base in the last one yeat

It said millions of naira were recovered from fraudsters who want to reap where they did not sow.
Head of the Benin Zone, Mr. Mailafia Yakubu, who spoke to a newsmen after a road walk to mark this year’s World Anti-Corruption Day said other fraudsters would soon be convicted.
According to him, “Corruption and its twin evil,  economic and financial crimes have ravaged our nation and it evidence in the decayed infrastructures and other basic amenities. 
“It is the bane of our development.  It is the reason our power supply is epileptic; It is the reason our country is still touted as a potentially great nation even after many years of sovereign statehood.”

Obaseki Presents N175bn 2019 Budget Proposal To Edo Assembly

Gov. Godwin Obaseki of Edo on Monday presented a budget proposal of N175 billion for 2019 fiscal year to the state House of Assembly.The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the budget proposal is 9.2 per cent above the 2018 budget of N146 billion.

The proposed budget tagged: “Budget of Socio-Economic Inclusion’’ has N95.8 billion as capital expenditure, while N79.9 billion is proposed for recurrent expenditure.’’

The governor said the budget proposal had a deficit of N27.4 billion which would be funded through internal and external financial interventions from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN)’s Special programmes and World Bank.

He said the budget was planned with 60 dollars bench mark crude oil price and increased state internally generated revenue.

‘‘The 2019 budget will consolidate on the infrastructural and socio-economic gains of the outgoing year 2018,’’ he said.

NAN further reports that the budget breakdown shows that N42.7 billion is allocated to infrastructure development, N9.3 billion for health, N26.8 billion for education and N7 billion for investment promotion.

Others are N2 billion for security, N9 billion for payment of pension, while N967 million is proposed for the judiciary.

Over 1.5m PVCs Collected In Edo – INEC

A of total of 1,519,350 Permanent Voter Cards (PVC) have been collected by registered voters in Edo ahead of the 2019 general elections.

Mr Emmanuel Alex-Hart, he Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the state, Mr Emmanuel Alex-Hart, disclosed this to newsmen in Benin.

Alex-Hart said that the Independent National Election Commission (INEC) office in Benin received 1,992,826 PVCs from the commission’s headquarters for registered voters in the state.

He said that the figure received from the commission’s headquarters represented the total registered number of voters in the state from 2011 to date.

The REC however said 473,476 PVCs had yet to be collected by their owners in the state.

According to him, the continued voter education and sensitisation by INEC was yielding results in the state, adding that registered voters’ turnout for PVC collection was impressive.

Alex–Hart further said that the commission had also commenced the sensitisation of eligible voters and all the stakeholders against vote buying.

”To achieve this, we have started sanitising the electorate through the churches, motor parks and worship centres among others.

”The commission has also given the responsibility to apprehend and prosecute whoever that is caught buying votes during elections,” he said.

APC Expels Edo Reps Member Pally Iriase

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has expelled a member representing Owan Federal Constituency, Hon Pally Iriase, over alleged anti-party activities and defection to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Iriase’s expulsion was carried out by his Owan East Local Government Area of the party, and stated in a letter signed by Zuberu Kasimu Shabah and Theophilus Aigboje, chairman and secretary of the party in the council, respectively.

The party ?alleged that Ward eight and nine executives of the APC in the local government, defected to the PDP on the orders of Iriase, and that he, in addition, allegedly presented his personal assistant, Hilary Ozogo, to contest under the PDP platform, just as he refused to attend APC meetings.

In the letter addressed to the APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole through the Edo APC state Chairman, Anselm Ojezua, Owan East APC said it ratified the decision of members in Ward nine, to expel Iriase.

The party said it complied with all laid-down rules and procedures, as enshrined in Article 21 of the APC constitution, in reaching the conclusion to suspend Iriase.

“I humbly invite Mr. Chairman to kindly note the decision of the Owan East chapter of the APC and grant it the very urgent attention it requires.

“The APC leadership and members in Owan East have already moved forward without Pally Iriase as we are growing in numbers everyday. This will be evident in the results we will post in the forthcoming elections.

“Iriase refused to officially inform the APC of his defection because he wants to continue to enjoy the benefit of the office of the deputy chief whip,” the Owan East local government APC further alleged.

Last Saturday, during the burial of his father, Iriase told newsmen that he is under pressure to leave the APC but that he is calm ?and focused and would remain in the party.

“I have made my direction politically very clear. I am not contesting in 2019.  I am a member of the APC. People who do not want to be in the APC have left.”

Edo Residents Call On INEC To Extend Voters Registration Exercise

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has been urged to extend the continuous voter registration exercise across the country.

The residents made the call on Friday, at various centres in the state in a rush to meet up Friday August 31 deadline.

The potential voters said despite coming to the centres as early as 5 am they were not given any form to fill as at twelve noon.

While calling on the federal government and the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC to extend the CVR exercise, the potential voters said the failure to register the many people who thronged the centres may affect the outcome of the 2019 general elections.

Just In: 10 Feared Dead In Bank Robbery In Edo

No fewer than 10 persons were killed following a robbery attack at two banks in Igarra, Akoko Edo Local Government Area of Edo, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

The incident occurred at about 5 p.m. when the robbers invaded the community in attempt to rob the two commercial banks in the town killing 10 persons including security officers attached to the banks.

A resident of the community, Mr Ofei Obende, said the robbers attacked the police station in the town before attacking the banks killing four security men at the bank premises.

The Secretary to the Otaru of Igarra, Chief Folorunsho Dania, confirmed the incident to NAN in an telephone interview and said 10 persons were feared dead and the police station set ablaze.

“This is a serious case, armed robbers have besieged Igarra so many lives killed, 10 persons have been killed.Three people were killed and in the banks too,” he said.

Many persons were killed. It is a calamity. In all, ten lives have gone.

The Police Public Relations Officer in Edo, Mr Chidi Nwabuzor, said information about the attack was still sketchy and would release details later.

NAN reports that six persons were killed in a similar attack in November 2015 when armed robbers invaded the community.

Four Die In Edo Road Accident

Four persons including a baby have been confirmed  dead after their vehicle  plunged into a river  at the boundary between Edo and Ondo States.
The accident was said to have occurred at the Ofosu Bridge and it involved a green Toyota Sienna.
A female was said to have survived with injuries.
A lawyer, Barr. Jefferson Uwoghiren, captured the moment divers attempted to rescue victims from the vehicle.
The video showed when a dead baby was pulled out of the vehicle.
Edo Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Mr. Anthony Oko, who confirmed the incident attributed the cause to over speeding.
Oko said to the victims were taken to Ago Itunu Hospital and mortuary at Ofosu in Ondo State.

Edo APC Endorse Oshiomhole For National Chairmanship Position

The Edo State caucus of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has unanimously endorsed former Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, for national chairman at the forthcoming convention.

This is coming just as the Southsouth zonal leadership of the APC rejected incumbent Chief John Odigie-Oyegun’s return  as National Chairman.

At the meeting were Oshiomhole, Chief Timipreye Sylva, Senator Magnus Abe, Halims Agoda, Hon.Eseme Eyibo, former Akwa Ibom State Military Governor Sam Ewang, Mrs Miriam Alli, Senator Francis Alimekhena, Frank Ajobena, Chief Great Ogboru, Victor Ochei and Cairo Ojougboh.

Also there were Senator Domingo Obende, Speaker Kabiru Adjoto, Comrade Frank Kokori and members of the APC caucus from the Southsouth in the National Assembly.

The Edo APC chairman, Mr. Anselm Ojezua, who disclosed the position of the state’s caucus after a meeting of party chieftains, said the party’s congress at the wards, local governments and state levels would hold.

The member representing Egor/Ikpoba-Okha  Federal Constituency at the House of Representatives, Hon. Ehiozuwa Agbonayinma, said Oshiomhole has the charisma to lead the party at the national level, noting, “The state caucus has collectively done the needful by requesting Comrade Oshiomhole to assist in re-organising and preparing the party for the 2019 presidential election.”
