Yuletide: Lagos Gov Akinwunmi Ambode Urges Nigerians To Emulate Jesus Christ

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, has urged citizens to emulate Jesus Christ so that Nigeria would be a better place with no hate and violence.

He stated said this at the 2018 Lagos Christmas Carol Service themed ‘The light of the world’.

Wife of the Governor, Mrs. Bolanle Ambode, in her welcome address, imagined what the world would be if everyone had the qualities of Jesus Christ.

According to her, it would have been a society where love reigns supreme with joy, peace and harmony. “Of course, we cannot be Jesus Christ; but we can imbibe his teachings and strive hard to emulate his qualities of humility, love for all, fairness, selflessness and consideration for fellow humans, among others.”

The governor, in his goodwill message, corroborated his wife that the world would be a better place, if the citizens emulate Jesus, adding that the carol is one of the many ways to appreciate the sacrifice of Jesus Christ for mankind.

“If God had not given us a chance of redemption through Christ; if he had insisted on vengeful action based on the sinfulness of the world, what will be the story of mankind?” he wondered.

Ambode said the scheme was mooted in 1999 under the former administration of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and established by Law No. 4 of May 2015.

The governor noted that though providing a health insurance scheme for all residents of Lagos State was a tough task, but his administration was committed to executing it.

He added: “We were committed to implementing this programme because the welfare of all Lagosians is of paramount interest to us and we came into office with a promise to make Lagos work for all.

“I am delighted that we have fulfilled that promise and are gathered at this historic and momentous occasion today for the formal launch of the Lagos State Insurance Health Scheme. How Governor Ambode Lost The Battle But Not The War In Lagos State, By Adebayo Samuel

Lagos state Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, lost the battle at the All Progressives Congress (APC) party primaries conducted few months back. Ambode was said to have fallen out of favor with some bigwigs in APC including the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) and the National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whom many believed is the reason Ambode is currently the Governor of the state.

According to several reports and publications, Ambode had stepped on so many toes of Lagos stakeholders. Report has it that he abandoned many projects initiated by his predecessor, Babatunde Fahola, and had also deviated from the state’s blueprint.

For example the Lagos compulsory monthly environmental sanitation to ensure a clean and safe state for her habitats was abandoned by Ambode. This was confirmed when Tinubu told journalists that Ambode had derailed from the Lagos state blueprint and master plan with no good reasons.

As the primary election drew near, it was obvious Ambode was going to lose the battle as he convened a world press conference where he made several allegations on how the security of the state is being compromised to ensure he loses out and also claimed the preferred candidates, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-olu, was not fit to govern the state as he had at a time been admitted at Gbagada Hospital in Lagos, and arrested abroad for allegedly spending fake dollar at a club.

These outburst and allegations reinforced the widespread speculations that Ambode had indeed accepted his fate. Results and pictures from the primaries revealed Ambode completely lose out to Sanwo-olu with a wide margin.

What amazed political observers was the way Ambode conceded defeat and congratulated his opponent Sanwo-olu. He aftermath of the defeat, promised to work with him to ensure his victory at the 2019 gubernatorial polls. This gesture, many believed had nestled the heart of the aggrieved party leaders and may as well retain Ambode in their good book for a possible consideration for future party engagement. To confirm his loyalty to the party and in total acceptance of his defeat, Ambode was seen side by side  Sanwo-olu at the APC National convention held in Abuja with smiles all around them.

The battle may have been lost by Ambode but he surely didn’t loose the war. As we approached the 2019 election we all hope the perceived love and unity between the Ambode’s and Sanwo-olu‘s camp yield a positive result and the state is retained as APC led state.

How Buhari, APC Leaders Led Ambode To Beg Tinubu, Aregbesola

Indications that the Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, may possibly secure his second term ticket on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), is coming true as leadership of the party, on Tuesday, appealed to the National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu to let go of the incumbent’s political sin.

Recall that the National Leader and the Governor has been at loggerheads, with Tinubu supporting a former Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, ahead of the September 29 primary to select the party’s flag-bearer.

At a meeting attended by President Muhammadu Buhari and some APC governors on Tuesday after the mega rally for Gboyega Oyetola, APC’s aspirant in Saturday’s Osun State gubernatorial election, the Guardian reported that the party’s leadership pleaded with Tinubu to let go of his grievances and allow Ambode return for a second term.

It was learnt that former governors of Osun and Ogun States, Chief Bisi Akande and Aremo Segun Osoba, started the peace overture, as they led Ambode to entreat the national leader.

The move might have been pre-planned, as Ambode rarely attends such occasions. His appearance in Osogbo, alongside his wife Bolanle, therefore gave rise to this suspicion. Sources said Tinubu, out of respect for Akande and Osoba, promised to let pass his grouse. But with a condition: his political loyalists in Lagos, who have made up their minds that Ambode must go, must be consulted.

The two advocates then led the incumbent to Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola, who is perhaps the closest loyalist of Tinubu. On the advice of the former governors, Ambode was said to have prostrated pleadingly, while the Osun governor expressed his grudges and those of Lagos party members. He also explained why the members insisted they wanted Ambode out.

One of the sins Aregbesola noted was Ambode’s alleged moves to destroy his (Aregbesola’s) political structure in Lagos West, especially in Alimosho. He said Ambode kept him waiting for several hours when he visited the Lagos government house. He further accused Ambode of vindictiveness towards party members that aided his emergence as governor in 2015. Aregbesola however reportedly promised Akande and Osoba that he would look into the matter.

At the meeting with Buhari and the APC governors, sources said Kebbi State Governor Abubakar Atiku Bagudu led the plea with Tinubu. “It is not in the culture of Hausa people to prostrate. What we normally do is express respect to our elders or leaders by saying Ranka Dade. But today, I am going to break that protocol,” he reportedly said, and prostrated.

Unable to hold his emotions, the national leader burst into tears, at which point, Buhari stood up, moved closer to Tinubu, and implored him to give Ambode a second chance.

Consequently, Tinubu called for a meeting of the Governors Advisory Council (GAC) to hold yesterday, the outcome of which would determine the incumbent’s fate.

The Governor of Lagos State, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode, has promised a beffiting Eid-il-Fitri celebration with the Muslim faithful across the State.

Governor Ambode who will be celebrating along with his wife, Mrs Bolanle Ambode at 20 designated locations said the gesture was in furtherance of his Administration policy of inclusive governance.

In a statement signed by the Public Affairs Officers of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Mr Lookman Seriki, said that apart from the usual merriment associated with such festivals, Muslims faithful will have the opportunity to pray for sustainability of peace and continuation of unprecedented development for Lagos and for Governor Ambode, as well as his wife and other members of his family for many successes recorded so far in the last three years.

“Before the last year celebration of Eid-El-Fitri at the grassroots, State participation in religious festivals was always held at the State House, a situation that excluded participation of large segments of the people.”

The Lagos State Government says N1.24 billion has been released to pay its retirees for March.

Mrs Folashade Onanuga, the Director-General, Lagos State Pension Commission ( LASPEC ), said the money was released to pay 183 retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).

He said that despite the high funding obligations of the state, it had been consistent in paying retirees.

“We urge retirees to take informed decision of the choice of either Programme Withdrawal or Annuity Plan.”

My Administration Is Committed To The Welfare Of Youths, Says Ambode

Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, said his administration is committed to the welfare of youths in the state and has plans for youths resident in the state.

Ambode said this on Monday while inaugurating the newly built Aiyetoro Bridge as part of the 21 Lagos-Ogun Boundary Network Roads in Alimosho Local Government Area of the state.

“65 percent of the people who are living in Lagos are below the age of 35 years. And that is why we need to plan for them. That is where the future lies.

“Not all of us can become graduates, but we can all have technical skills to earn a living. That is what this government is all about, that is what we want to do and that is what we will do,” he said.

According to the Governor, the younger generation needs an adequate plan by the Federal Government hence the need for his administration to plan for them.

“We need to start planning for the younger ones so that they can have something to do. When they leave school, we should be able to plan for them,” he added.

Skill Acquisition: Pathway To Economic Prosperity For Youths, Says Ambode

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Thursday identified skills acquisition as a sure pathway to economic prosperity and personal development of the burgeoning youths in the State, saying his administration will continue to support initiatives towards that drive.

Governor Ambode, who spoke at the graduation ceremony/job fair of the first set of trainees from the Lagos State Employability Project (LSESP) held in Oregun, Ikeja, Lagos, said the graduation of 540 graduants was one of the primary goals of the Employment Trust Fund (LSETF) set up by his administration two years ago to address the issue of unemployment among youths.

He expressed excitement that while many residents and entrepreneurs have taken advantage of the fund, the LSESP was providing a viable platform to bridge the gap of shortage of skilled and employable labour required to fill the needs of the job market and also provide 10,000 new jobs for youths by 2019.

“While the business ecosystem in the State has improved over the years, a manpower skills gap remains a significant issue for businesses operating in Lagos. Several firms and industries across the country are unable to find graduates and non graduates with requisite skills to fill key positions. Paradoxically, there are thousands of unemployed youths out there desperate to find a job, any job,” the Governor said.

Governor Ambode, who was represented by the Deputy Governor, Dr. Mrs. Oluranti Adebule, said through the successful graduation of the 540 trainees, his administration was laying the necessary foundations for steady and sustainable economic growth in Lagos State.

He said each of the graduates would be awarded a certificate endorsed by both the Lagos State Technical and Vocational Education Board (LASTVEB) and the Australian Vocational training and Employment Group (AVTEG), which according to him, would affirm them as globally competitive and employable.

“The Employability Support Project will continue to support these young men and women through job placement initiatives. With twin aims of capacity building for Lagos State youths and the provision of employment opportunities for them, the project aims to provide 10,000 new jobs by 2019,” he said.

Mischief Makers Using Land Use Charge To Misinform Residents, Says Ambode

The Lagos State Government has said that some mischief makers were desperately exploiting the challenges posed to the government by the new Land Use Charge Law which seeks to raise more money for the provision of public infrastructures for the benefit of all, to misinform the public.

It would be recalled that Governor Akinwunmi Ambode had also debunked insinuations that many tax items were reviewed upward, saying that the claim was not true.

Speaking to journalists after leading a symbolic walk against sexual and domestic violence on Monday in Alausa, Governor Ambode said his administration was very sensitive to the people, and would not go all out to deliberately overburden them.

“I want Lagosians to understand one particular issue. We have over 300 tax items for which nothing has been touched apart from this Land Use Charge and maybe one other. But again, we are a very responsive government; we are very sensitive because at the end of the day, governance is about the people; it is about what they want.

“Yes, people might like that infrastructural development is on the progressive chart in Lagos but also it comes with a price. But notwithstanding in the middle of all that, a responsive government will listen to the yearnings of her people.

“At the end of the day, it’s all for the development of Lagos. What this government is interested in is to create a trajectory and framework of permanent prosperity for Lagos. It is not about today, it is about the future and if there is going to be permanent prosperity in Lagos, some things have to be done but I can tell you based on the dialogue and the things we have been receiving on the Land Use Charge, obviously we would respond positively to those yearnings,” Governor Ambode said.

2019: Otedola Endorses Ambode For Second Term

Chairman, Zenon Oil, Mr. Femi Otedola, has endorsed the second term bid of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State, saying he had “done overwhelmingly well,” and deserved re-election.

In a statement, Otedola said in the last three years as a Lagosian, he had watched and followed transformation projects across the state, pointing out that Ambode was building on the foundations laid by his predecessors.

“He is building roads and bridges, schools and hospitals, water treatment plants, sewage and storm water drainages, solid waste management plants and mass transport infrastructure.

“He recently got approval for the electricity power infrastructure for Lagos, which when fully executed, will make Lagos State almost energy independent in Nigeria.  You are all aware of the newly-acquired mass transit buses that are going to be natural gas powered in order for us in Lagos to be the first to comply with the global climate agenda of de-carbonisation,” he said.

Lagos Unveils Plan To Build Contemporary Museum

The Governor of Lagos State, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode has highlighted plans by the State Government to build a modern museum in the state capital, Ikeja to promote arts and sciences in addition to the Marina museum.

Governor Ambode made the statement when he received a delegation from Ford Foundation led by its Executive Vice President in charge of Programs, Ms. Hilary Pennington.

The Governor lauded the organisation’s gesture for donating $600,000 (about N216million) towards the architectural design and commencement of the iconic Lagos Museum Project to be located in Presidential Lodge and Lagos House in Marina.

Speaking at Lagos House in Alausa, Ikeja, Governor Ambode said that the two iconic tourism structures, which are in line with the vision of his administration to transform the State into a world class tourist destination, would be completed within the next two to three years.

The Governor commended Ford Foundation for the confidence reposed in the State with the partnership, saying that the collaboration, coming from an internationally reputable organization such as the foundation, had served as a motivating factor for the State Government to do more for the people in the sector.

According to the Governor, We had said we are going to have our own Lagos Museum and the dream is being spearheaded by Ford Foundation. The funding for the architectural work, the design and the initial work space of the Museum is being funded through the foundation and I am happy to announce that they are making a total donation of $600,000 to us for the commencement of this project to ensure that whatever it is that we put down as Lagos Museum actually reaches that world class status that we want our Museum to be.

“There is a National Museum in Lagos but it does not belong to Lagos State and so we are very proud that we want to sustain our own heritage and we are very proud also that Ford Foundation has also decided to do a road show for us to go across Europe and other parts of the world to bring interested donors to come and partner with us to make the museum a reality.

“In addition to the Lagos Museum which we have decided will be within the Lagos House and Presidential Lodge in the Onikan axis, it is our intention also to construct another museum in the Ikeja axis that will be called the Contemporary Museum of Arts and Sciences and it will be in the location where the Lagos Arts Council is presently,” he said.
