The Supposed 18 hour Uninterrupted Power Supply in Lagos, the BPE Lied
|A few days ago, the Bureau of Public Enterprise (BPE) through its director-General, Benjamin Dikki stated in a meeting with the Abuja Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture that electricity consumers in Lagos now get 18hour uninterrupted power as a result of the privatization efforts of the Jonathan Administration. This mischievous statement is a patent lie as nothing is further from the truth. Indeed, the privatization of the power sector by the Jonathan Administration appears to have only exacerbated an already worse energy issue.
As we have previously articulated in campaign statements, there has been no improvement in power supply in the last couple of years; truthfully, a close look at the indices will reveal that the nation is yet to exceed the 4,000megawatts (MW) it was generating before this Administration came to power. There has been no increase in megawatts; what we have got is simply a change in energy distribution policy. The Jonathan Administration has simply re-allocated distribution of more megawatts to select areas around the country; so if one is living in those prime areas, it creates the false impression that there is improvement in electricity generation and distribution. Yet, the nation is still on 4,000MW.
So this carefully couched and misleading statement from the BPE is a grave insult to the sensibilities of Nigerians and Lagosians in particular.
