Still on That Gumi’s Letter to Buhari, By Muhammad Malumfashi
It’s well known that Sheikh Ahmad Gumi wrote an open letter to General Buhari which sparked some responses, praises, abuses and comments everywhere from those who truly understand what the Sheikh was trying to say and those who don’t. Would you believe someone abusing Ahmad Gumi without even reading the letter?
To start with, I’m a Buhari supporter, but I wouldn’t be blinded by his support in any way. Unapologetic Buhari’s supporters don’t take me wrong please. Likewise I have nothing for Gumi. I’m just taking a look at his letter.
Firstly, Sheikh Gumi’s letter was only a timely advice. I believe Gumi as any other Nigerian has the right to give advices especially to his brother and at this crucial moment. He narrated a story about Abu Dhar Giffari and Prophet (SAW). Prophet (SAW) advised Abu Dhar not to take leadership despite being one of the most trustworthy companions. So also bear it in mind that Sheikh never doubted The General’s qualities, contrary to what his (Buhari) blind supporters believe.
Taking a look at the letter, The Sheikh started by mentioning Buhari’s policy on sealing tight the use of money which almost all politicians are after, surely he’ll have problems with most people. Politicians nowadays are only after Money. Also mentioned about how his so-called loyalists used & dumped him. You can mention few names here at state, regional & national level.
Who on earth wouldn’t believe that Peace, Security & Stability is the major predicament in Nigeria. That’s Gumi second point in his letter. Even the General himself has to agree with this, not just over 3 months his convoy was attacked. This clearly tells you what Nigeria’s biggest problem is. Not Corruption. Sure that we need to tackle corruption and no slight of doubt Buhari is the man for this. But our security is priceless. Imagine GEJ announced the winner of 2015 general elections (God forbid, but we all know that this is practically possible with rigging), how many Buhari’s supporters would go wild on the streets of Nigeria? How many? The next day someone like Reuben Abati will publish that it was Buhari who is behind all this. Then the stage is set for WAR. To remind you Post-election violence claimed over 1000 lives. Only God knows how bloody it’ll be this time around. In search of a corruption crusader we may end of losing our lives. We need peace & stability in Nigeria. Well said Sheikh.
Gumi made mentioned of age factor. Well, to be honest I don’t believe age is a factor. I always believe leadership is all about competency. Not much to talk about.
Some even believe that Sheikh was playing politics. By suggesting Buhari to step down for the likes of Rabiu Kwankwaso (Hausa/Fulani), Tambuwal Waziri (Muslim), Rochas Okorocha (Southerner), Rotimi Amaechi (Christian), or Raji Fashola (Yoruba)? I’m sure Sheikh Gumi was speaking without sentiments. He also said PDP should field some other person like Ukpabio, Muazu, Ribadu, Shekarau and not Jonathan only for peace to reign in our nation.
That’s that about that!
Some Buhari fans believe that only the General can save this country. He might be the most competent & deserving. But it’s still possible for a better Nigeria without him. During the reign of Umar (AS) he removed Khalid bn Walid. Was it because he was incompetent? No. But for the same reason, some believed victory is from Khalid. And the muslim marched on to victory without Khalid as well. Enough said.
May God choose the best leaders for us. Ameen!
