SOS To Governor Fashola By Afis Odeyemi
Sir: The basic purpose of governance is to bring prosperity to the governed, most especially the less privileged in the society. The terrible condition under which residents of Ijegun-Ikotun community in Igando/Ikotun Local Council Development Area of Lagos State, Nigeria live is quite pitiful and particularly embarrassing to a developing State of Lagos. The Ikotun-Ijegun road which serves as the major and mostly navigated route annexing other Lagos big cities and towns is now more a shadow of itself. The long abandoned Isheri-Jakande road has for too long made it extremely difficult for residents in search of their daily bread, a result that has seen a shift to the much preferred Ijegun-Ikotun road. Consequently, the vulnerability of the road reinstated the need for the Lagos State Government to respond swiftly to the call of the people. Residents continually decry the hardship faced daily on the bad road, thus, making it extremely thorny traveling in and out of the community, hence, the call out to Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola’s led administration for help.
The Ikotun-Ijegun road, was first constructed by the former governor, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, during his first phase in office as the then Lagos State Governor, is now more of a death trap to pliers traveling the root on a daily bases. Just recently, a moving trailer in a bid to negotiate a bend, swerved dangerously off the road on its side, resulting in a heavy traffic gridlock on the ever busy road. This however, was due to the dismal shape the road has been; thank God there were no recorded casualty. The road, built over a decade ago has continuously worsened and almost impassable, being the only major channel connecting towns and cities within the Lagos metropolis.
Despite the hardship, the Ijegun-Ikotun road serve a greater percentage of residents of Alimosho community which includes; Idimu, Igando, Ikotun, Egbe, Abaranje, Ijegun among others. As well as, Isheri, Ijagemo, Ijedodo, Kudebu and Okerube community of Iba Local Council Development Area (LCDA) of Lagos State, are among others, beneficiaries of the road. A visit to the community reveals the helplessness of the people.
If the living condition of the people must be improved and further deaths be averted, the incumbent government must intervene by responding speedily to the challenges of this people by building new roads and reconstructing collapsed once needing a face lift. These will in no small amount compliment other laudable projects executed by the Lagos State, All Progressive Congress (APC) led administration.
