Soludo Vs El-Rufai: You’re Not an Intellectual, I am! By Ashraf Usman
So on the morning of the 6th of May (Happy Birthday Mum!) Beijing time, I woke up to a delirious twitter feed, almost rejoicing in the joy of Chukwuma Soludo’s stinging review/critique of El-Rufai’s controversial book, The Accidental Public Servant titled, ’Nasir el-Rufai’s book as Intellectual Fraud?’ The fiction of an ungrateful, desirous man is basically Soludo’s rebuttal. The premise was maintained through the article with statements like,
“The book is totally dishonest.”
“A fabrication of quotes and lies.”
Soludo justifies this theme by asking how could el-Rufai be quoting such long passages of conversation, and that to do such would be an impossibility without a tape recorder. The article subsequently highlights Soludo’s real grouse with the book, a misrepresentation of his own credentials. A list of which Bretton Woods organisations he has worked for and when ensues, falsifying any claims to the contrary.
What is it exactly that I missed that is worth getting happy about? What did I miss? It’s no news that in a tell-all book, matters get exaggerated, distorted and created. You don’t need to be an intellect to point that out? Sure, el-Rufai should get called out for it, but where is the need in celebrating that? Does the questioning of someone’s intellect translate into intellect itself? The article should have been titled, ‘You’re not an intellectual, I am!’ The fact is, we shouldn’t care about intellectualism and who is the rightful owner. Every time they speak we should remind them of their time in office. Every time el-Rufai opens his intellectual mouth at an intellectual book opening to blab intellectual opinions, ask him why he gave his wife a plot of land? No it’s not illegal, but it’s not right. Every time Chukwuma ‘Bretton-Woods’ Soludo plants his intellectual expensive Tistoni branded shoes at the podium of an intellectual symposium, ask him whether the state he left the banks in 2009 is the legacy of an intellect. Every time they vibrate their angelic intellectual vocal chords, remind them!
