Some Similarities between Ebola Virus and Boko-Haram By Kabiru Tsakuwa
So far, it proves very difficult for me to pin-point the difference between Boko-Haram menace and Ebola scourge ravaging Nigeria and West Africa today. Instead of getting readily answers, what keeps coming up were characteristics and similarities that in my opinion cannot just be mere happenstance!
First, terrorism was imported into Nigeria from outside the shore of the country as confirmed by Mr. President and C-in-C of the arm forces of the federal republic of Nigeria, Mr. Good luck Ebola Jonathan. Likewise, bio-terrorism agent (Ebola virus) was imported by a Liberian Man of dual American citizenship into the country. He was said to have escaped quarantine facility in Liberia under questionable circumstances!
Second, Boko-Haram bombings targets innocent Nigerians in the Mosque, church, market, motor garage and any gathering of people with intent to cause maximum havoc and destructions of life and properties. The same applies to the Ebola virus disease. It has no specific target as it kills irrespective of creed, region, tribal affiliations or religious inclinations.
Third, Boko-Haram was said to be a franchises, or more appropriately, a money making enterprises, which enable both local and international arm contractors to smile to the bank. They would love to see the crises lingers for only God knows how long.
In the same vein, the experimental drug (Mzapp) which was said to be an antidote to Ebola can be seen from similar perspective. Large chunk of our national resources will surely be expended in procuring the so-called medicine at the initial stage just like the anti-retroviral HIV drug. And the manufacturers of the drug and their agents are poised to smile to the banks robustly.
In both cases, the money that could have been deploy into more beneficial ventures for the wellbeing of the people of Nigeria will end up being wasted in the name of fighting BH menace and Ebola!
Fourth, both Ebola scourge and BH are weapons of terrorism and mass destructions using different methods, but with the same end result. The sole aim has been depopulation and destruction of life and properties. If we think deeper, we can see that while on the one hand, Boko-Haram engaged itself in physical terrorism using deadly arms; the new Ebola Virus disease dwelt on biological terrorism to decapitate the unwanted populace living atop vast resources!
Also, worthy of note is, so far federal government has miserably failed to equip the army with modern hard wares to tackle the menace of BH despite atrocities being committed daily on hapless people as reported in the mass media. Here, it requires no rocket science to see point of convergence, especially when we juxtapose the lackadaisical fight against BH with Ebola scourge.
