Sikiru of Oniru: The Making of A drug Lord (Season 3) by Ajewole Bejide
Sikiru came back to Lagos full of hope with the second class upper degree he made in the university. He was intelligent and still very young; it was just a matter of time before he gets a job, so he thought. He still had some money from what he saved of his NYSC allowance. He made a number of his CV, went to the Island and submitted at the head office of some companies.
He waited for months expecting feedback from the various organisations he had submitted his CV’s, but after waiting for 3 months without feedback, he made another journey to the Island and submitted another round of CV’s again. He was becoming fed up. At least this was not what he thought while serving, this definitely was not the kind of life he dreamt of.
After waiting for over 6 months, he was called for a couple of test at some of the organisations he submitted his CV’s even did interviews in some. He got the shock of his life in one of the organisations when he was asked to pay to get employed. He asked where to get the money from and said this is rather bad. He paid the money eventually, but vowed to recoup it one way or the other when he gets employed through fraudulent means. He never heard from the company after that.
He decided to join his dad at one of his sites where he does bricklaying, he was not going to be any more burden on the old man; he was going to make money for himself. He carried blocks and water and was paid daily for this, though it was stressful, at least he has some amount in his pocket at the end of the day. On the seventh day at the site, he got the shock of his life; a shock that made him quit the site.
He had gone to the site as usual this very day and after a couple of hours, he decided to rest a bit under a tree until he eventually dozed off. It was not long after dozing off that his father called his attention to resume work, because the owner of the site is around. He quickly braced up and returned to carry brick to the area it is needed. It was with this brick on his head that he stumbled upon the owner of the site.
In the arms of the rich looking site owner was Rukayat, the same Rukayat he ditched at Kebbi state. Rukayat stood in awe as she watched the guy she dated and even fought over during NYSC. She turned to her boyfriend and said ‘Honey remember the guy I told you cheated on me during service, this is him right here, Sikiru meet Rotimi my ‘sweetheart’. That was the greatest insult of his whole life. He has never been this insulted in his entire life. He set the brick on his head down, smiled shyly at Rotimi and walked away. He has been humiliated by Rukayat and this was a humiliation he never expected.
He left the site for Agege and went straight to Dolly’s bar to drink and maybe get the humiliation out of his system. He drank bottles upon bottles of ‘shine shine bobo’ and was in tears. He had dumped Rukayat during service but this wash was more than he could ever bargain for.
After some hours at the bar, some boys came in and bought all the drinks at Dolly’s. They asked that Dolly give everyone whatever they wanted from their account, they were yahoo yahoo boys who had just hammered and were on a drinking spree. One of the boys was Tope, a primary school mate of Sikiru.
They greeted warmly and after some minutes, Sikiru excused him from his group, took him to a corner and laid bare his mind to him. He told him how he graduated with a 2:1 and yet to get a job, he narrated the day’s ordeal and asked that Tope pity him and help in any way he can showing him a copy of his CV. Tope laughed and told Sikiru his own story too. He had graduated and after years of looking for a job now does ‘Yahoo’ he told Sikiru that would be the only help he can render but he needs the approval of his gang.
The two men rejoined the gang and after some explanation from Tope, the gang decided to give Sikiru a chance. He was to start as bank boy, his job was to go to the bank and redeem the western union or money gram transfer. He was to get a small cut doing this and also learn the ‘Yahoo’ trade alongside.
Sikiru adapted fast, he redeemed western union upon western union and was soon known in the banks. He was getting some money and was also learning the ‘Yahoo’ business and how to catch magas. The group was fun, every evening, they party especially when they hammered.
But not too long after, tragedy struck and Sikiru was busted by the cops. He had gone to redeem western union for a huge amount and the boys had made from their victim. After a thorough process in the bank due to the amount, he was eventually paid, but just as he was about leaving the banking hall, two security personnel accosted him and asked that he see the manager. He was handed over to the branch mobile police and taken to the nearest police station where he was told he was been arrested for advanced free fraud. His gang members who were waiting in a parked vehicle outside the bank premises zoomed off as soon as they noticed that Sikiru has been arrested.
