Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso: EFCC’S Invitation and Pension Saga By Adnan Mukhtar Adam
The news that have been circulating among media agencies since last week is that of Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, the immediate past governor of Kano, on the allegation that he is under house arrest by the EFCC following a petition by some group of pensioners in Kano (political opponents) alleging that the former governor and senator representing Kano central mismanaged pensioners money amounting to 2 billion naira that was a fixed deposit in Euro Bank Plc which was liquidated.
The governor through his supporters filed a suit at the state High Court sitting in Gezawa in order to seek for an order stopping EFCC from arresting him, the suit was filed by the supporters lawyer Barr Okechukwu Eze and fortunately the court granted him the request and adjourned sitting to 15th of July 2015.
In this piece, I want to focus on two issues; that of the EFCC’s alleged invitation and the State pensioneers petition to the anti graft agency. Was the governor invited by EFCC? The answer is NO, he denied it through his Private Secretary in a press release dated 3rd July 2015, he stated that he was never under house arrest, neither was he invited by the EFCC nor instituted a case against the EFCC but his supporters did so on his behalf against the Economic Financial and Crimes Commission (EFCC), it is through their lawyer they instituted a legal action against the anti graft agency instead of restricting it against the petitioners whom he regard as political opponents. On the pension scam;
Did the former governor diverted the sum of 2 billion pension fund to his personal use or was there any mismanagement of the said funds? The answer is NO! He was cleared on the said allegation by the management of the state pension trust fund through its permanent member Alhaji Alhassan Ibrahim, he stated that the former governor has never put the state pensioners money to any bank as fixed deposit because he had no right to invest the pensioners money, he emphasized that the board has issues with Euro Bank Plc which liquidated and the money was 100 billion not 2 billion as alleged by the petitioners, the issue has been referred to Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation(NDIC) and they have started paying back the money. If that is the case on what ground are they petitioning the former governor? Is it to tarnish his image or to spoil his bright political career come 2019 insha Allah? One will only understand how politics is playing a role on this saga.
The PDP and Shekarau supporters whom I regard as tribal and political jingoists instituted the petition which is politically motivated by the enemies of Senator Kwankwaso, this enemies are trying by all means to blackmail and tarnish the image of Kwankwaso and at the same time to spoil his political career because of the good future he has in the politics of Nigeria, will they succeed? Insha Allahu they will not. One thing that will make a reasonable person to think that the petition is politically motivated and engineered is about the petitioners, some of them served the previous government of Shekarau as Special Advisers, we know how they used the state pension fund to purchased gubernatorial contestant form for Shekarau, we were aware of their role in the recent election against governor Ganduje, though they have exercised their constitutional right but we have to show Nigerians the true picture of these political petitioners.
Though, I don’t take their petition as a serious one because Kwankwaso has encountered more than such brunts, not long ago EFCC came to kano and arrested the chairman of the state assembly budget committee, his members including the principal officers of the house, interrogated them thoroughly but what happened?
They were released and no any dirty deal was detected, I am assuring you that Senator Kwankwaso will be cleared and exonerated from all the allegations raised against him by God Grace.
For the EFCC, it has no right to arrest a person on a mere suspicion or placed him under a house arrest, that amounts to harassment and infringements on his personal liberty unless and until he is found guilty of such an offence, the EFCC therefore must be very careful so as to avoid becoming a political anti graft agency. I was astonished on whether the said petitioners are indigenes of Kano, as how on earth will you petition a person that built and transformed your state to what it is today? just give a look at the enormous achievements of this man, is that what you will reward him with? “Lallai Mutumin Kano Ba a Iya Masa” I doubt if they are kano indigines, a good indigene of kano will not behave that way.
I pray that may Allah save us from the evil of our enemies!
