Senate Postpones July 21 Resumption Until Buhari Returns From US
The senate has postponed its Juky 21 resumption of plenary to enable it put its house in order and present a common front to President Muhammadu Buhari when he returns from his US trip.
The clerk of the senate in a statement on Friday said the date has been has been shifted to July 28, by which time President Buhari is expected to have returned from his US trip.
“This is to inform all distinguished senators of the Federal Republic of Nigeria that the resumption of the senate in plenary has been rescheduled from Tuesday, 21st July 2015 to Tuesday, 28th July, 2015,” the statement by the senate clerk reads.
No reason was given for the postponement, but a source said the postponement was necessitated by the need for the senators to use the opportunity provided by Buhari’s US trip “to sit down and reason together” to resolve the crisis rocking the upper chamber of the national assembly.
Recall that the National Assembly has been engulfed in crisis following the election of its leadership as well as the appointment of principal officers of both chambers, which was against the wish of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Subsequently, both chambers went on recess, fixing July 21 as their resumption date.
However, efforts by the party to resolve the crisis resulted in a recommendation by governor in the APC mandated to put an end to the crisis that all outstanding issues, including setting up of committees, be resolved before the senate reconvenes.
According to a senator, “Reconvening next week without resolving the outstanding matters would be unhelpful. So some of us reasoned that since the president would be away for a few days starting from this Sunday, we should not reconvene yet. “Rather, we should use the opportunity to come together, sort out the contending issues and arrive at some workable agreements. By the time Buhari returns from his US trip, the senate would be ready for business.”
