Senate Leadership Perfect Plans to Declare Seat of Defecting Senators Vacant
Following the defection of 11 senators of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Wednesday, indications have emerged that the leadership of the Senate have perfected plans to declare vacant the seats of all defecting Senators who moved from one party to the other.
The leadership of the senate is however constrained with the joint letter written by the 11 senators which invariably makes it impossible to declare their seat vacant.
A source said “their seats can’t be declare vacant if they write a joint letter since the constitution say they write it individually. That is why the leadership is insisting that they write letters each.”
The Senate has insisted that it will not accept a joint defection letter from the 11 Senators because that will be violating the 1999 constitution.
The plan is to get the senators to write their letters individually following which the leadership will have the legal backing to declare their seats vacant.
But it appears the defecting senators were very much aware of this move, thus their resolve to jointly write the letter which was presented to the Senate President on Wednesday.
The senate leadership has however refused to read the letter on the floor of the senate as required by the rules. Attempt to get the Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekwerenmadu failed to read the letter on Thursday failed as he asked the defecting senators to wait for the return of the Senate President David Mark to read the letter.
