SENATE APPROVES CHANGE OF NAME FOR UNILAG, TWO OTHERS
Barely 24 hours after the request made by President Goodluck Jonathan to the Senate to approve the change of name of Univeristy of Lagos and 2 other Federal Universities was read on the floor by the Senate President, the Nigerian Senate has against public opinion and massive criticisms, approved the renaming of the University to Moshood Abiola University (MAU).
Other institutions that were renamed in the same bill sent to the Senate were the Federal University of Technology Umudike which was renamed to the Michael Okpara University, Umudike and the Federal Univeristy of Technology, Yola renamed to the Modibbo Adamawa University.
President Goodluck Jonathan had earlier in the week sent a letter to the Senate asking for approval to rename the 3 Universities, a measure that was meant to bypass the embarrassing rejection of the name-change in what many Nigerians saw as illegal and unconstitutional.
Meanwhile, we await the outcome of the law suit that has been filed by some students of the University of Lagos, now Moshood Abiola University asking that the name-change was unconstitutional as it initially was done without parliamentary approval.
No date has however been fixed for the hearing of the matter by the Court.
