Ribadu May Defect to PDP as Pressure Mounts
Former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, may join the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to contest the governorship election in Adamawa State, it has been learnt.
The decision followed intense pressure major stakeholders including some extended family members, relations and associates are putting on him to accept and use the party’s ticket to realize his governorship ambition.
According to a source, some of the stakeholders were said to be so desperate that they invoked God’s name to pressurise Ribadu.
The source said: “From the look of things, Mallam Ribadu may bow to pressure to join the PDP. His inevitable choice is informed by a bigger picture of saving Adamawa State from underdevelopment.
“The PDP may appear a bitter pill to swallow but the exit of ex-Governor Murtala Nyako has weakened the All Progressives Congress (APC), with most members defecting to PDP.
“If Nyako had been around, the APC governorship ticket would have been automatic for Ribadu. But the situation in APC in Adamawa State now is that former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar is now firmly in control of the party’s structure in the state. Given their antecedents, there is no way Atiku will allow Ribadu to be APC’s governorship candidate.
“Even if Atiku is forced to concede the APC ticket to Ribadu, he will win, but PDP will control the House of Assembly. We will then have a replica of the situation in Nasarawa State where Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura is at the mercy of the lawmakers.
“All these calculations make Ribadu’s defection to PDP a fait accompli. He is just waiting for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to issue guidelines.”
Also, a top official of the PDP in the state said Ribaduis been persuaded to join the PDP ahead of the poll because “it is the only realistic platform on which he can be elected.”
“The incentives before Ribadu are very attractive. One, he will get an automatic ticket. Two, he will not spend one kobo on campaign as the party machinery will take care of that. Three, he can have a realistic go at presidency in 2019,” the official said.
Ribadu’s entry as the “anointed candidate” will change the dynamics, with implications for internal party politics. Two days after information about the move emerged, a youth organisation, the Adamawa Concerned Youths for Good Governance has urged Ribadu to vie for governorship seat on the party’s platform.
The Chairman of the group, Alhaji Ibrahim Isa, said yesterday that the situation in Adamawa required a leader with focus and sense of dedication.
“We call on Ribadu to come and join the PDP and contest for the governorship seat of the state.
“Our call on the former EFCC chairman to contest in the forthcoming gubernatorial election is for him to salvage the state from total collapse and decay, occasioned by serious maladministration in the last fifteen years,” Isa said.
He said the group had identified corruption as the major cause of the under/development of the state, adding that Ribadu was the only solution to the menace.
“Ribadu is known internationally as an anti-corruption crusader and so if placed in a position of authority, a solution would be found and investors would be at ease investing in Adamawa,” Isa said.
