Protesting APC Youths Clash Over Age of New Youth Leader
The inauguration ceremony of the newly elected officers of the All Progressives Congress (APC), was partially disrupted on Wednesday as two different group of youths suspected to be supporters of the national youth leader clashed with supporters of another youth group who were opposed to his election.
The Youths stormed the Sheraton Hotel, Abuja venue of the event and took over the place for over 30 minutes protesting for and against the choice of the youth leader.
Just before the ceremony was to kick-off, some of the protesting youths stormed the venue in their numbers wearing a T-shirt carrying the photograph of the controversial youth leader, Mr. Ibrahim Dasuki Jalo.
On the other hand, youths who were against the choice of the youth leader also took their protest to the venue, a development that led to the national leaders of the party, including General Mohammadu Buhari being held hostage for over thirty minutes.
Protest had trailed the emergence of the Ibrahim Jalo as the youth leader at the National Convention of the party following controversy over his age.
While the APC in a statement by its publicity secretary, Lai Mohammed said the age of the youth leader is 43, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), under whose platform Jalo contested for the House of Representatives in 2011 before joining the APC said he is 52 years old.
Both age notwithstanding, youths in the party kicked against his emergence especially a the constitution of the party defines a youth as someone between the age of 18 and 40.
