Prominent Benue Indigenes Assures APC Senatorial Candidate, Onjeh Of Guaranteed Victory
By Y.G.M. Arshaffa
Some of the most influential citizens of Benue state who are stakeholders in Benue South senatorial zone where the rerun election between former Senate President David Mark and Comrade Daniel Onjeh holds on February 20, 2016 have assured Onjeh of not only their support but also assured him of a guaranteed victory.
They expressed their confidence and belief in Onjeh and his capacity for effective representation and delivering the dividends of democracy. The stakeholders also expressed the view that age is not a barrier to high office and that Onjeh’’s age should even be an asset. They find it astonishing that the same Mark who has been preaching the politics of being in the mainstream now wants to plunge the Idoma and Igede people into opposition, something he has preached against for the past 16years. This shows his inconsistency and exposes his lack of credibility.
Those who assured comrade Onjeh of their unconditional support include the Deputy Governor Engineer Benson Abounu, the former President of the Senate Ameh Abute, former Deputy Governor of the state Chief Steven Lawani, former Minister of State for Education Dr. Jerry Agada, former Minister of State for Niger Delta Dr. Sam Ode, Chief John Enyi and many other prominent sons and daughters of Benue South. This super endorsement of comrade Onjeh occurred at a well-attended APC stakeholders forum on Friday 5th February, 2016 in Makurdi the state capital.
According to these influential stakeholders, the contest is a referendum on the future of Benue South. It is about properly situating the zone in the scheme of things in the nation to attract heavy federal presence to ensure rapid development and advancement.
This is the first time since 1999 that Mark has lost at the Court of Appeal and keen watchers of Benue politics see this contest as epochal: The downfall of Mark, senator for 16 years, half of them as the most powerful and influential President of the Senate; and the rise of Onjeh, a former NANS and WASU President who was also one of the key mobilisers of youth across the country to support Buhari’s aspiration for the Presidency long before the 2015 elections.
Most visitors to the southern zone are shocked beyond words at the level of under-development, backwardness, lack of basic infrastructure and the wide spread poverty. This is unfathomable considering the high degree of literacy, the number of highly educated people and the fact that the De Facto President of Nigeria in the Jonathan Era, David Mark, hails from the zone.
The people of Benue South have a date with destiny on February 20th, 2016. They have been urged to consolidate change by changing David Mark who wants to lead them into opposition which would only consolidate the present economic, social and political stagnation of the zone.
The endorsement of Comrade Daniel Onjeh and the tremendous support he enjoys across the zone, from the state government, party faithful and thousands of well-wishers should translate to a colossal defeat for Mark and an unprecedented victory for Onjeh.
A new dawn beckons indeed for Benue South.
