Press Release: Omisore’s Defeat is a Lesson to Kwara PDP, Says Kwara PDP Youth Leaders
Although the governorship election in Osun State has come and gone, its lessons should not be lost on all people of good conscience, particularly the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State led by our amiable Chairman, Bar Iyiola Akogun Oyedepo.
From all indications, the Osun election has inextricably pointed to one thing, and one thing alone: that Nigeria’s fledgling democracy has come of age; that the era of imposition, backward sentiments, ballot stuffing and most importantly, that only candidates with true popularity and grassroots appeal shall henceforth win elections in the country.
It is in the light of the above that we ask the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State not to allow the lesson of the Osun election to be lost on it – we should see it as a wakeup call, a clarion call to return to the drawing table and re-strategize on future elections.
The just concluded Osun election should serve a lesson to the political class in Kwara State that elections are no longer won by the amount of cash that can be thrown around, the amount of votes bought, the quantity of ‘stomachsturcure’, etc but by the sheer grassroots appeal of the candidates. The Kwara take a cue from the outcomes of the Osun and Ekiti elections in its eventual choice of candidates for all elective positions in the state, particularly the gubernatorial contest.
However, the first true test of this commitment should be shown in the forthcoming primaries in the state. We implore both the national and state leadership of our party to stop at nothing to ensure that the primaries are free, fair and democratic. Anything short of this will naturally have a domino effect on the fortune of the PDP in the 2015 general elections in Kwara State.
In other words, any attempt to subvert the will of the electorates through imposition by the Abuja Cabals or any other power and principalities for that matter, no matter how highly placed, will not only spell doom for the party in Kwara state, but shall be sternly resisted.
Meanwhile, we congratulate President Goodluck Jonathan for his avowed commitment to ensure that elections are free and fair in the country. We are bold to say that in the over 50 years history of Nigeria, it is only President Jonathan that has made good the promise to deliver the country from the evil of rigging and subversion of the will of the masses. Nigerians, and indeed posterity, will never forget this enviable record, that has now become a reference point for sister countries in the sub-Sahara Africa.
On a final note, we implore all the gallant contestants in the historic Osun gubernatorial contest to remain calm and refrain their supporters from any untoward action against political opponents. They should realize that in any political contest, there are bound to be a winner and runner-ups. We ask the winner to be magnanimous in victory, while the losers should take the outcome in good faith.
