Again, Presidency Moves to Impeach Gov Amaechi
As Governor Murtala Nyako of Adamawa State battles for survival following the impeachment noticed served on him by the State House of Assembly, he may be joined by his counterpart in Rivers State, Chibuike Amaechi, who sources said could face an impeachment plot set to be hatched by the six Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members of the state assembly.
Nineteen out of the 25 members of the Assembly yesterday signed the impeachment notice after the motion moved by the member representing Numan Constituency, Mr. Kwamoti Laori, who accused the governor of committing acts of gross misconduct in the performance of his duties in the state.
Sources said that similar to the trouble being fomented in the Adamawa assembly, the presidency has hatched a new plot to impeach Amaechi.
The move, said the sources, would be coordinated by a serving minister from the state in the federal cabinet.
Those to be used to execute the plot, the source revealed, are the six members of the state House of Assembly who are the PDP members opposed to Amaechi and have refused to be part of the sitting of the majority 25 members who are members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), like the governor.
“The plan is for the six members to convene a sitting of the House of Assembly at a private residence or office, with Evans Bipi presiding as the speaker. At that sitting, a member will then move a motion for the suspension of the other 25 APC members.
“Once the purported suspension is adopted by the six members, they will now move for the impeachment of Governor Amaechi on very spurious grounds.
“The impeachment plotters claim to have on their side the support of the NJC-appointed administrative Chief Judge of Rivers State, Justice Daisy Okocha. They say, Justice Okocha will and is working with them to impeach Governor Amaechi,” a source in the state revealed.
When contacted, an official of state government, who did not want to be named, as he was not authorised to speak on the issue, stated that the said minister of state, last weekend, met with the PDP lawmakers and some money exchanged hands.
The Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mrs. Ibim Semenitari, also said they were aware of moves by the PDP lawmakers to use the NJC-appointed Administrative Judge, Justice Okocha, to commence impeachment proceedings against Amaechi.
While not confirming the allegations of money exchanging hands, she said the state government would resist any attempt by the six lawmakers to impeach the governor.
She said: “There is no way to our mind that six will be greater than 25 lawmakers in the House of Assembly. The Rivers State Government will use all legal and constitutional means to resist such impunity.”
Efforts to reach the leader of the anti-Amaechi lawmakers, Bipi, were not successful as his phone was switched off.
