Confusion As Police, JTF Claims Arrest Of Killers Of Deeper Life Church Members
The lack of cooperation and synergy bedeviling Nigeria’s security agencies, which has now become a tradition, has reared its ugly head again, this time around between the Joint Task Force, JTF in Kogi state and the Nigeria Police.
Both agencies charged with the responsibility of maintaining peace and securing the lives of Nigeria have laid claims to the arrest of the suspected killers of 20 worshippers at the Deeper Life Bible Church, Otite near Okene, Kogi State and the killing of two soldiers and two other worshipers at the Okene Central Mosque.
While the JTF spokesman, Sagir Musa said the suspects – two men and a woman were arrested by the JTF in Okeneba, a surburb in the central senatorial district of Kogi state and taken to Lokoja for questioning, the police headquarters in Abuja announced through its Deputy Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba, that the leader of the gang that attacked the church,Yekini Isah, who hails from Obehira area of Okene, was arrested by a team of policemen with two other members of his gang including a female, after a gun battle at Idare Hills, suspected to be the hideout of the criminals.
The police spokesperson in the statement said “the Kogi State Police Command personnel today,8th August, 2012, made a major break-through in their effort to bring to book, the perpetrators of the heinous crime that left two soldiers and several worshipers in Deeper Life Church, dead in Okene. Acting on intelligence, crack detectives investigating the case stormed a criminal hideout in Idare Hills of Okene, suspected to be a safe haven for the hoodlum wreaking havoc in the State.
“In the ensuing battle, the gang leader identified as Yekini Isah of Obehira area of Okene sustained injury on his head. Though he initially escaped from the scene, he was trailed and arrested in a hide-out at Ibilo in Edo State, where he was receiving native treatment for his gun wounds. Two other suspects, including a female, were arrested during the operation. One AK 47 rifle with 30 rounds of live ammunition was also recovered from the criminals” the statement said.
Just last week, the Department of State Security Service, otherwise referred to as SSS paraded six suspect said to have been responsible for the death of Comrade Olaitan Oyerinde, the Principal Personal Secretary to the Governor of Edo state, Comrade Adams Ohiomhole, putting paid to the earlier announcement by the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar that it have in its custody, suspected killers of the same person.
What these traditional differences portend for the security of lives and properties of Nigerian is something to ponder over.
