The Phenomenal “Oranmiyan” By Babs Iwalewa
Ancient yoruba mythological stories tells us that Oranmiyan was a revered persona cum deity worshiped by his people. Oranmiyan was reputed to be a giant and an acclaimed warrior who earned victories after victories. He was also a direct descendant of the acclaimed progenitor of the Yoruba race,Oduduwa. Oranmiyan was deemed to have personified the generally acclaimed “omoluabi” ethos of the Yorubas.
In contemporary times, a certain Rauf Adesoji Aregbesola has emerged as an embodiment of the great Oranmiyan of yore, both in form and in practice.
The man Rauf Adesoji Aregbesola represents so many things to his admirers and foes alike. Love or hate him, he is a man who evokes a lot of emotions from people since he emerged like a blitzkrieg in the political firmament of the south west region of Nigeria. Since his days as a commissioner in the Lagos state executive council, he has demonstrated an uncommon panache, forthrightness and deep conviction to higher responsibilities. In a nutshell he is a dogged achiever.
His trajectory and sojourn in the politics of Osun state and environs has redefined so many things, making him the main issue in the politics of Osun state.
His original and transformational attitude to governance has been one that has often left his political opponents in a state of shock and awe. Hence it wasn’t too surprising to discover that his opponents in the last elections absconded from a televised public debate with him.
The passion and missionary zeal exhibited by Aregbesola in his approach to governance and politics in general could aptly be described as a phenomenon which has amused his supporters to great lengths and rattled his detractors to no end.
His novel policies such as the Opon Imo (learning digital tablet), school garment factory, school reclassification, social welfare for the poor and elderly, massive road and physical infrastructures across the state is intended to be a reference point in any governance manuel for some time to come in this part of the world.
Indeed in the run up campaigns that preceded his re election, dispassionate observers could see that the mammoth crowd and electrifying campaigns summarized just a simple fact and that is Rauf Aregbesola has indeed become a phenomenon not only in Osun politics but the politics of the South West.
And as he assumes a fresh term of office , it is sincerely hoped that the phenomenon witnessed in the last four years continues in leaps and bounds.
