PDP Changes Attitude, Applauds Unity of Politicians, Opposition Against Terrorism
Few days after President Goodluck Jonathan applauded General Muhammadu Buhari’s call for all hands to be on deck in the war on terror, where he described his views as those of a true patriot and a respected nationalist and elder statesman, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in a dramatic change in its behaviour towards key figures in the opposition party yesterday commended the political class for building a united front against terrorism.
This was in stark contrast to the earlier attitude of PDP, which had shortly after the terrorist bomb blast at the Nyanya motor park in Abuja penultimate Monday issued a statement blaming APC and its leaders, including Buhari, for the attack. Buhari had threatened to sue PDP if it did not apologise to him and withdraw the allegation.
The PDP national publicity secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, in a statement Saturday, said the new bond among political leaders in the country against terrorism was unprecedented in contemporary history, stressing that it “has restored the confidence reposed in the political class to provide leadership direction for the nation.”
Metuh said, “In uniting, the political leaders not only rekindled the spirit of oneness among Nigerians but also revived the faith in the Nigerian project, which was hitherto threatened by unhealthy dissensions.”
He said, “Our political class has shown their commitment to the unity and greatness of our dear country. They have shamed doomsday prophets who relentlessly work against our unity by not only stoking the fires of hatred and dissensions but also by predicting disaster and countless negatives against our dear country. Their coming together to present a common front not only speaks volumes to the citizenry regarding the unity of the nation but sends very strong message to those behind acts of terrorism and violence in our land.”
PDP also commended Jonathan for a relentless fight against terrorism and the country’s leaders for the successful National Security Council meeting, which he said had created the platform for unity in the antiterrorism war.
The party called on Nigerians to remain vigilant and continue to stand against actions that could encourage violence and terrorism, saying, “The challenges facing the nation are transitory and cannot defeat the collective spirit of the Nigerian people and their proven determination to live as one.
“The PDP believes in Nigeria and Nigerians. We believe that our country will emerge out of these challenges a renewed, stronger and more united Nigeria. The time has, therefore, come for all citizens to look ahead and join hands in love to build a prosperous country where all will live in peace and unity, irrespective of ethnic, religious and political differences.”
