Path Of Honour For Governor Ayodele Fayose: A Need For Caution By AbdulRahman Agboola
Even though the Headquarters of Warlords for the ancient Kiriji War is located in Ekiti State, the advent of civilization has brought to fore, eminent personalities of high intellect and achievements in different spheres of life from the State. One of the foremost living legends in the Legal Profession in Nigeria, Chief Afe Babalola, the reigning lead Human Rights Lawyer in Nigeria, Comrade Femi Falana and many other cerebral personalities of high esteems hails from Ekiti State, one then wonders the basis for the continuous and flagrant abuse of laws and others in the State pride as the fountain of knowledge.
Since the exit of Chief Niyi Adebayo as Governor of Ekiti State in 2003, all successive Governors have faced different dimensions of crises from the power brokers in the State to the extent whereby Ekiti became the only State ever governed by a Sole Administrator in the South West during this democratic dispensation, an issue that derailed governance in the State but expected to unite both elites and commoners to always sue for peace at times of political misunderstanding but the lessons seems not learnt by the power brokers who have failed to reposition the State for greatness.
Governor Ayodele Fayose was removed from Office in the middle of his first term on allegations of unmerited tendencies and was replaced by a Sole Administrator before the emergence of Engr Segun Oni from the 2007 Governorship Election in the State. The victory of Segun Oni was challenged at the tribunal and was upturned in favour of Governor Kayode Fayemi who was adjudged the true winner of that election. One of the people that played critical role in the emergence of Kayode Fayemi was Ayodele Fayose and both enjoyed good relationship but for a brief moment before political disagreement that led to their separation after the 2011 general elections. In 2014, Former Governor Ayodele Fayose defeated Governor Kayode Fayemi at the governorship election to return as the Governor of Ekit State today.
Since the inauguration of Ayodele Fayose as Governor of Ekiti State in 2014, the State has been in a confused State with high degree of political crisis here and there, but the most intense is the House of Assembly crisis where the Governor hastily sponsored a fraction of the Assembly to impeach the legitimate Speaker Adewale Omirin over the expedient need for the Governor to be in absolute control of all organs of government in the State, the Assembly is dominated by members of the opposition party which is not strange but only requires understanding for harmonious relationship. This action has subsist till date and the Governor is seriously haunted by that action as the House of Assembly has made it difficult for the Governor to reign in peace and act with honour.
It could be recalled that Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun State inherited a House of Assembly dominated by member of the opposition party partnered with them with good characters and conscientious actions to a level where the then Speaker of the Assembly, Hon Adejare Bello remarkably commended the Governor as a true leader worthy of emulation and the same fate occurred in Ekiti at the early stage of Governor Fayemi administration. The approach of Governor Fayose against opposition in Ekiti State immediately after inauguration sent signals that Fayose was ready for a showdown and was not ready to negotiate his peaceful reign as clearly shown in his clampdown against business owned by members of the opposition party in the State.
The crises in the State today has reached a vendetta level, which seriously endangers the survival of Governor Ayodele Fayose himself with the emergence of the opposition party as the dominant party in Nigeria. He exhibited a high level of hatred for the President Elect during the Campaign period and acted in an unbecoming manner in the process of the election, he has committed a lot of flaws by his sponsor of a fraction of the House of Assembly loyal to him simply because he enjoys a temporary positive relationship with the downtrodden in Ekiti State.
Governor Ayodele Fayose was removed from office during his first term by members of his political party on orders for above and he should be reasonable enough to know that if the leaders he cherished so much could ditch him and sponsor his removal then when he made errors lower than others but was punished while others were protected how much of now that he is messing up with leaders who are not his friends. Since Ayodele Fayose has maneuvered himself back to the seat of Governor of Ekiti State, many of us wish he could peacefully govern the State and complete his term like Governor Kayode Fayemi but Fayose seems carried away by an authority that is transient.
In my humble assessment of Ayodele Fayose, his street credibility is deceiving him to see himself as a thin political god who can call the bluff of any politician in Ekiti State and wish to turn himself to a god father in Ekiti Politics and beyond. This is viewed as over ambition but he has succeeded in achieving that at the last election in the State where he successfully installed his loyalist as members of Senate, House of Representatives and House of Assembly. This feat was a repeat of the 2003 era but he never completed that term in spite of good atmosphere at his disposal. He should not be carried away by his victories here and there, it could only be permanent if he cautions himself, what is after figure six goes beyond seven.
The path of honour for Governor Ayodele Fayose to come down from his high horse and restore the authority of Adewale Omirin as the Speaker of the State if only he wish to have a peaceful reign as the Governor of Ekiti State and successfully complete his term of office, this I say without any fear of contradiction as his actions against the legislators will eventually spell doom for him at a later time in his administration and the only way to avoid the doom is to negotiate with them, give them their dues and negotiate truce immediately. Months ago, President Jonathan wielded so much authority; he pumped money to Fayose to stabilize in Ekiti while he financially strangulated Aregbesola to pith him against the Osun people but Aregbesola survived it while Jonathan has become history.
If the incoming administration succeed in restoring law and orderliness to the Country, clamp down on thugs and immoralities, it will be difficult for Fayose to survive the heat of formidable opposition against him when his proud thugs are off the streets. It will be most honourable for Fayose to refuse the wicked guidance of bounders he surrounds himself with, tailoring him towards self-destruction by telling him to bluff the oppressed legislators. The Yoruba adage says if a Child falls down, he study the front while an elder that falls study the rear, the records of events that led to his downfall years ago are available for him to study, intolerance and violence of yester years should not bring him down again.
Governor Ayodele Fayose must exhibit decent tendencies and comport himself in the discharge of his duties as the Governor of Ekiti State, there is yet to be a panel of enquiry from any impeachment process or whatever he is using as an alibi to tackle the legislators headlong, let Fayose settle his disagreement with the legislators and concentrate on governance. This path of honour is the best that can guarantee him a safe landing to complete his term of office as he should not undermine the intensity of the forces he has to contend with if he fails to put his house in proper order. Call it speculative thinking or prediction, Fayose must seek adequate caution in handling the affairs of the State, a fried of the crowd should rejoice less as the crowd will eventually returns to their respective abodes.
