Reports that Pastor Adeboye is retiring as the General Overseer of the Redeem Christian Church of God is not entirely correct.
A senior member of the Church who does not want to be named revealed to Abusidiqu that he is only retiring as the General Oversser of the Nigerian branch of the Church, while he remains the General Overseer of RCCG worldwide.
Speaking Saturday morning at the Annual Ministers Thanksgiving of the Church in Shimawa, Ogun State, Adeboye announced former Special Assistant to the General Overseer (SATGO) on Finance, Pastor Joseph Obayemi as the new General Overseer.
He also named Pastor Johnson Odesola, who was the Special Assistant on Administration and Personnel, as the church Secretary.
Obayemi and Odesola will overseer the activities of the church in Nigeria, while he remains the General Overseer worldwide.
“You will agree with me that Redeem Church has grown phenomenally from about 15 branches when Adeboye took over in 1981 to over 14,000 branches in Nigeria and more scattered globally across 190 countries”, the insider said.
“What Adeboye has done is a strategic leadership and administrative change in the church”, he added.
He said Adeboye is getting old and would not be able to manage all the branches of the church scattered around the world alone, so he needs to relieve himself of some of the work load.
He added that the appointment of Obayemi is a strategic leadership change that is meant to groom him for the task of the job and be accepted by members of the church before his eventual exit.
“Adeboye is not going to remain the overseer of the church forever. He is going to have to hand over the baton someday. So instead of waiting till that day and probably create leadership crisis that may break the church, he has decided to bring in someone who will be groomed to fill the space. By the time he leaves, the person would have learnt to perfectly fit into his shoes”, the insider reveals.
It will be recalled that Pastor Adeboye over the leadership of the church from its then pastor and founder, Rev. Josiah Olufemi Akindayomi.
Before his appointment as the General Overseer in 1981, Adeboye was a translator of Papa Akindayomi sermon from Yoruba to English after joining RCCG in 1973.
Adeboye was then a lecturer in Mathematics at the universities of Lagos and Ilorin, a role he played on a part time basis for three years even after his appointment as General Overseer in 1981, before eventually retiring in 1984 into full time priesthood.
