Our Youths Of Today, BY Azeez Abdullahi Opeyemi
If am not mistaken, history has never recorded where sheep are smarter than the shepherd. In a religious context, followers are meant to receive guidance from their Holy fathers or Imams. From these analyses, those behind receives anointing from the ones ahead but if judiciously narrated in the context of today’s youth, an additional spice is needed for the soup.
As a believer and promoter of African ideology on morals; I can categorically say that – youths of today has successfully drove themselves into the box of confusion, anxiety and mental degrading by walking away from elders. Seeking for advice and making advances for prayer has dropped.
In our last article – ‘Our Elders of Today’; we did an absolute massage of how elders walked the young minds of today into their confusion state by adopting total abstinence from the foundation of youth by eliminating tales, advices and other means. Knowingly that foundation is the bedrock of all endeavours whether in a physical, spiritual or mental realm.
Miss Sara Mustapha opined in her comment received on the last article that – ‘after rumbling through this whole catastrophe, that those who will impact, encourage, fight, and proclaim among us (youths) will, and those who will not, will never. She furthered her argument with this generation being the computer age, but should that affect morals?
‘Talk no more so very proudly, let not arrogance come from your mouth; for the Lord is a God of knowledge and by him actions are weighted’- as Samuel 2:3 ESV enlightens us on the subject matter. Without doubt, a blind man can see the arrogance engrossed in chunk of today’s youth.
Some of the people in this circle (youths) feels they are bigger and better than the elders due to their exposure level. Knowing the Bahamas; living in Coconut Island, and rocking the latest Gucci; Dolce and Gabbana doesn’t mean you are wealthier in the actual sense.
A man’s altitude they say is determined by his attitude. If these acclaimed youths who are rich finds it difficult to control their ego, that’s the beginning of their end. Your attitude matters in surviving and growing. This factor can successfully lead a man to his destruction.
‘Wisdom is plagiarism, only foolishness is original’ – Alao Idris Ibrahim (Observation).
The survival of a man lies in his ability to acquire knowledge of the Lord and the world. It’s undisputable that chunk of youths has found love in frivolities. Though working without play makes Jack a dull boy but I ask, what has been the percentage of pass to failure at every cadre of education? What will 18hours of watching Big Brother Africa add to their lives?.
Even religiously, our youths are very good at occupying the ‘school three’ of the congregation. And the holy books supported that being Godly makes you a better person, how can our youths be better when the words of the Lord has less value than bbm and whatsapp? How will the Lord soften the heart of our youths when they can’t remember that Quran and Bible can be downloaded for free?.
We are all craving for a better tomorrow but can’t erect the present well; can we build something on nothing?
In the words of a Chinese man – ‘Don’t curse the darkness, light a candle’. The conscious youths should initiate a sense of goodness into the bad ones. If this isn’t done, they are selling their future from present because the neglected ones will turn to be the thorn tomorrow.
