Osun 2014: NANS Warns FG Against Deployment of Troops
The South West chapter of the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS-Zone D, has chided the Federal Government over the deployment of troops for the forthcoming gubernatorial election in Osun State.
A statement jointly signed by Oloja Olarewaju and Afolabi Mutiu, the assistant general secretary and deputy coordinator respectively, it advised the Federal Government to stay neutral in the forthcoming poll, saying that attempt to militarised the election poses a big threat to the survival of democracy in Nigeria.
“We are aware of plans by the Federal Government to intimidate the electorates with securitymen, arrest of opposition party members and provision of Mugabe-type ballot papers to aid technical riggings.
“The Federal Government should only perform their statutory functions by providing adequate assistance to the electoral body in order for INEC to be non-partisan in the discharge of their duties.
He, however, urged Nigerian students, youth and well meaning individuals in the State to desist from political thuggery and any act capable of truncating the electoral process, adding that students should vote for integrity, prudence and competence against voting for reckless stomach infrastructure.
“Our future lies in our hands. What we will achieve tomorrow will surely be the products. Of our today’s actions, reactions and inactions.
