Nurse Suspected of Contacting Ebola from Patrick Sawyer Speaks From Quarantine In Lagos
By Kikiowo Ileowo
“I come to you with my head bowed in tears and agony” says a email from a staff of First Medical Consultants who is being quarantined over suspicion of having Ebola Virus.
Gloria (not her real name), asked that Nigerians and Americans at large help launch a media campaign to pressure President Barrack Obama to release the Vaccine that can help save lives of staff of First Medical Consultants Hospital who have been quarantined over suspicion of having the deadly rampaging Ebola Virus.
A friend of Gloria who spoke with The Paradigm said “last December as we were organizing Igboville Enyimba Medical Retreat for Aba, one young nurse (Gloria) volunteered and joined us to make it a success. She was previously working at Otunba Tunwase National Paediatric Centre Ijebu Ode in Ogun state and a graduate of Ebonyi State University Abakaliki.”
“Earlier this year, she relocated to Lagos to work at First Consultant Hospital Obalande owned by Dr Ohiaeri. But last week she sent the following email and later disappeared:
“I never contacted his fluids. I checked his vitals, helped him with his food because he was too weak. I basically touched where his hands touched and that is the only contact I had with him. I never made direct contact with his fluids.
“At a stage, Patrick yanked off his infusion and we had blood everywhere on his bed, but the ward maids took care of that and changed his linens with great precaution because every patient is treated as high risk. If Ebola were airborne, by now ‘wahala for dey’, but I still thank God. Friends, up to our uniforms and all linens were burnt off.
“We are on surveillance and off work till 11th of August hopefully. Our samples have long been taken by WHO and so far we they said we are fine. For me, kudos to my hospital management because we work professionally with every patient considered high risk as that is the training we were given. Had it been a hospital where they manage ordinary gloves like Government hospital and some janjaweed private hospital, we would have been in serious problem.
“I want to take this time to thank the Lagos State and Federal Government as the have been very supportive. I am still feeling good and every other person in this hospital.”
“We hear there is a cure in the United State, please all well meaning Nigerians should help prevail on Obama to release this vaccine for us.”
The Paradigm has since confirmed that the writer of the email was among those who attended to the Liberian Ebola patient, Mr Sawyer, in Lagos.
She is currently being quarantined at Mainland hospital Yaba Lagos. The clinic is immediately after Yaba College of Technology.
She is still alive and spoke with our source today on phone, but one of her colleague who is a nurse died yesterday, as you might have read in Nigerian newspapers.
The Paradigm is withholding some confidential information about her case and forty others in quarantine for legal and humanitarian reasons.
