NUESA To Hold Public Lecture In Honour Of Late Obafemi Awolowo
The Nigerian University Education students’ Association (NUESA), University of Ilorin chapter will on Wednesday, 5 May, 2015 hold a public lecture in honour of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, the late Nigerian political icon.
In a statement issued by the association president, Comrade Owoseye Yomi Silva, the public lecture is part of the activities lined up to mark this year edition of her ‘Back-to-School’ programme.
He said that the public lecture was aimed at x-raying the educational submissions and policies of the late Awolowo in order to proffer probable solutions to the challenges facing Nigeria’s education system. He added that education remained the panacea to many challenges bedeviling the Nigerian nation.
“We have decided to hold this event in honour of the late sage, Obafemi Awolowo because of his significant contributions to the education sector in Nigeria, which include the introduction of free education in the country, and this provided opportunity for many people to acquire education,” Yomi noted.
Themed, ‘’Connecting the Past with the Present For A Better Rewarding Nigeria Education System’’, the public lecture will draw speakers and eminent personalities from across the country. It will hold at the Education Lecture Theatre (EDLT) of the Faculty of Education.
Prof. Abdulrasheed Na’allah, the Vice-chancellor of Kwara State Univeristy and Prof. Rasheed Olaoye of the Department of History and International Studies, Unilorin are the guest lecturers for the public lecture.
The programme will be chaired by Aare Afe Babalola (SAN), while the Unilorin VC, Prof. Abdulganiyu Ambali is the Chief host. The Director of Obafemi Awolowo foundation, Chief (Mrs.) Dosunmu Awolowo will also be in attendance at the event.
Dignitaries expected to grace the occasion are the governors of Lagos and Osun states, Babatunde Fashola and Rauf Aregbesola respectively. Others are Kayode Opeifa, Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Prof. Alfred Adegoke, Dean, Faculty of Education, Unilorin, and Chief (Mrs.) Jumoke Harbs, Chairman, Roemichs International School, Ilorin.
Students from secondary schools and tertiary institutions across Kwara State are ecpected to attend the public lecture.
