Independence is a condition of a nation, country, or state in which its residents and population, or some portion thereof, exercise self-government, and usually sovereignty, over the territory.
Democracy is a government by the people; a form of government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised directly by them or by their elected agents under a free electoral system.
Nnamdi Azikiwe, Obafemi Awolowo, sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Ahmadu Bello, Aminu Kano, Herbert Macualay, Anthony Enahoro, Margaret Ekpo,Funmilayo-Ransome kuti, Akanu Ibiam,Michael Imoudu, Jaja Nwachukwu, Remi Fani-kayode ; while fighting for independence must have had as an idea of independence, the words of Charlotte Brontë ; “I am no bird; and no net ensnares me: I am a free human being with an independent will”.
Gani fawehinmi, Femi falana, Ken saro wiwa, Dele Giwa, Wole soyinka, Dele Momodu, MKO Abiola, Kudirat Abiola ; while fighting for democracy, with some losing their lives in the struggle must have had an idea of democracy, the words of James Bovard; “Democracy must be something more than two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for dinner.”
Nigeria is a Nation riddled with perversion of purpose! As Brian McGill said : “Deeply-rooted conditioning has perverted us. We ARE the culture of violence. We must look at ourselves.”
Independence has been perverted into apartheid and democracy has been perverted into tyranny! Oh! How terrible our living heroes must feel when they see Nigeria today, how they must weep!
Free from our colonial masters, the beneficiaries : our leaders, have plunged us into segregation ; separate development : Social, Religious , and Occupational APARTHEID! Free from dictators, the beneficiaries : our leaders, have led us with a facade; Tyranny disguised as Democracy!
Canton, OH in his Anti-War speech said ; “In every age it has been the tyrant, the oppressor and the exploiter who has wrapped himself in the cloak of patriotism, or religion, or both to deceive and overawe the People.”
Bruce Coville also said ; “Withholding information is the essence of tyranny. Control of the flow of information is the tool of the dictatorship.” Lastly euripides submitted that; “When one with honeyed words but evil mind
Persuades the mob, great woes befall the state”
Let us now pause to juxtapose the following quotes to recent happenings in our polity : from SA arms deal, to BH insurgency/ negotiations, to sale of PHCN, to our refineries, to Oil subsidy scam , to unemployment, to NIS tragedy, to the state of our economy : if we are insightful and true to ourselves and one another, we will see the aptness with which all the above quotes capture the situation of present day Nigeria!
At the risk of being labelled an APC protagonist and a ‘hater’, I dare speak the truth; that after 16 yrs of PDP rule, we are still taking baby steps as a nation, we still have inept leadership that takes pride in mundane things like commissioning a section of a road!
We still have unemployment as a pervasive story in most families!
We still have, due to ineptitude, divisive ideology as an election winning strategy as recently showed and shamelessly broadcast by our ‘elite’ in the #AdAyWithJesusInIsrael propaganda! Not even the much demonised Abacha stooped that Low!
We still have impunity as a perk of being in or knowing someone in government; as made obvious with ABBA MORO still remaining in Govt despite collecting money from unemployed youth and indirectly contributing to their deaths! Impunity seen in pardon granted Abacha and Alameiseigha; 6 months in prison given to Bode George and Tafa Balogun and most recently, the beating of a high court judge in Ekiti without any consequences!
We still have ‘Mere theft’ and ‘grand theft’ as an integral part of governance! Such a shame that we gave our destiny as a nation to a clueless PDP! It is time to take it back! We have to take it back for our children! Take it back for our ancestors who fought 4 our Independence : For people like Ken Saro-wiwa ; who was killed brutally for daring to demand for our freedom! People like Gani Fawehinmi;who fought against tyranny as a general of the masses’ army; building trenches around the masses against a pack of ravenous wolves that are our politicians!
We have to rescue Nigeria against the leviathan politicians who poison our minds, one against another with their religious&tribal venom! The time is not the future;near or far! The time to rescue Nigeria is Now!
