NASS Standoff : Its Time for Jonathan and Mark to Go By Abdulbaqi Jari
It was a surprising, embarrassing, ridiculous, anarchist action by the Nigeria Police under the command of clueless Jonathan to stop the House of representative members including Speaker Tambuwal from entering the national assembly and deliberating over the need to, or not to extend emergency in the three north eastern states. I was watching the development live as I saw police firing tear gas to the honorable members of the House.
Later about two hours in that situation, the chairman of the national assembly David Mark directed the closure of the National assembly after some members of the House started signing papers for their approval to impeach Jonathan. That was not the first time mark compromise the National assembly for personal gains, and in services to his Lord ‘ Goodluck Jonathan’.
This shows that the executive arm of government has no respect for the other arms of government. It will be recalled that the President forcefully removed Justice Ayo Salami of the court of Appeal for a simple reason that he may pass a judgment not in his favor. Many a times the NASS will pass a resolution but the executives arm will just march over them. Sometimes the legislature are bribed just like the judiciary; Nigeria is just a sick old woman.
I congratulate President Jonathan for his 57 birthday anniversary. Mr President is a nice man – but he needs to go. Nigeria needs more than just a nice man for development. Mr President knows it within himself that Nigeria is beyond his control. Why not he take the path of gentle men and go?
As 2015 elections approach closer, Nigerians must rise beyond tribal and regional chauvinism and vote for credible and competent leader irrespective of party flat form.
