The appropriations committees of both the Senate and the House of Representatives are set to conduct a national public hearing on the 2017 budget estimates.
Our correspondent reports that the budget proposal was referred to the two committees on January 26 after both chambers debated the money bill for three days.
The two committees, chaired by Senator Danjuma Goje (APC, Gombe) and Rep Mustapha Bala Dawaki (APC, Kano), said in their desire to fast-track the passage of the budget estimates, and in accordance with relevant guidelines, they have resolved to conduct a 3-day national budget hearing between 13 and 15 February.
The objective of the hearing, they said, was to make the national budgeting process an all-inclusive activity for all Nigerians and that presentations at the hearing would focus on the basic recommendations and budget policies of President Muhammadu Buhari as contained in the budget speech presented on December 14, 2016.
Expected at the hearing are the Ministers for Budget and National Planning, Udoma Udo Udoma; finance, Kemi Adeosun; power, works and housing, Babatunde Fashola; agriculture, Audu Ogbeh; transport, Rotimi Amaechi; solid minerals, Kayode Fayemi; education, Malam Adamu Adamu; health, Prof Isaac Adewole, among many other heads of MDAs.
