Nasarawa Impeachment: No Going Back, Says Assembly…Lawmakers Relocate to Abuja to Impeach Al-Makura
The Nasarawa State House of Assembly has declared that it will not reconsider its resolve to impeach Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura if he does not give satisfactory answers to the allegations of misappropriation and constitutional breach levelled against him.
The chairman, House Committee on Information and Security, Hon. Mohammed Baba Ibaku, who stated this yesterday in Lafia, said no amount of demonstration and protest would deter the Assembly from carrying out its constitutional obligation.
“We are not going to reconsider our decision because it is not based on any sentiment,” he stressed, adding “the fact that he (Al-Makura) paid people to dance on the streets is far from addressing the issue at hand”.
Already, the presidency and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) officials, it was gathered have facilitated the relocation of the state deputy governor, Damishi Luka Barau, the Speaker and 20 members of the Assembly to a private home in Abuja.
Apart from hinging the relocation on ‘deft moves not to leave things to chances’, it was also learnt that the movement of the state’s government officials to Abuja might not be unconnected with the increasing tension and violence of anti-impeachment protests for three days in Lafia last week, which claimed some lives.
Some reports have it that the lawmakers are planning to impeach the governor from Abuja where they are currently taking abode.
The report said the lawmakers resorted to operating from Abuja to avoid distraction following public outcry by Nasarawa citizens against their plot to remove the governor.
When reminded that the Supreme Court had ruled that a governor’s impeachment proceedings must be carried out in the state’s assembly complex and not otherwise, the source added: “All I can tell you is that the impeachment will be executed in Abuja for certain strategic reasons.”
